I second Tford, for a great all around hunitng dog you can't go wrong with good lab staock. Another fine choice is a wire hair griffon a fine dog that does it all from ducks to quail. I have hunted over brittanies and they are fine dogs but every brittany i've been around have a smell to them lol . |

Ok, I'm confused. The thread title mentions tracking dog, but the post talks about bird hunting. So, do you want a pointer, a setter, a retriever, or do you want a dog that can track and trail deer, obamas or what??????? Since I've had all of 'em, tell me exactly what you're looking for and I'll offer a suggestion, but as far as a Brittany or a Lab, either one is an excellent choice, if they fall into the category of what you are looking for. As for a tracking dog, my Jack Russell is a superb blood trailing dog, and will tree squirrels. See the quandry your thread starter has created?????? |

My 2 yr. old lab will bird hunt with us, tree a squirrel and track a deer. She is also a great family pet/house dog. Couldn't ask for more from one dog!

I vote Drahthaar, the things they do in their tests is absolutely amazing! From bloodtracking to waterfowl to upland birds, I have one right now and love him!! Check out www.vdritterburg.com to see what I mean. |

I think the german breeds are the best alround dogs for tracking hunting on land and water ! if I ever change from the German Shorthairs I will go to the Pudle Pointers been around 3 of them and all 3 impressed me a great deal ! Great trackers ! |

Its hard to beat a good Labrador Retriever. I have had labs for many years now. All of them were excellent upland game bird hunters, excelled in water fowl hunting, and about the best friend and family dog you could ever want. While dog hunting for deer with, or blood tracking them is illegal in my State I know my Labradors would do that. Also while I don't think he actually hunted them but when he saw them, gave chase to squirrels then, the game was on.. he'd keep them in the trees and show you what tree they were in... if you shot one and it fell into brush or tall grass, my Labrador would find the squirrel. But for some reason I never knew why.. he would crush the heads of the squirrels.
As for a Brittney, I had one Brittney in my life. That was more then enough. And she was a great hunting dog, but a terrible house dog. For some reason, and I swear I never hit or was ruff with that dog, it would see men, including me, walk into the house and would squat and make a puddle. Out in the field she behaved perfect with me. Once back home, that dog avoided me like I had a stink. My wife demanded the dog stay in the house, and after cleaning many spots... I put my foot down and said enough! She was sold as breeding stock to another Brittney owner as she was well papered.. and I purchased a yellow Labrador puppy for the wife. We had that sweet girl for many years until cancer took her away from us. |
