What reason did they give? Wet nesting?

Flooding and cold mostly during the breeding season. The young birds I have seen are about 2 weeks behind normal.

You NRs can still come out, but you will have to work hard for the birds, unless you are on a lease that releases birds.

Scrambled eggs with squirrel brains, fried ham, hash browns, toast and coffee. The rest of the squirrel will be supper tonight.

That's not the reason the numbers are down. Yes, everything was late but that did not blow the whole population to bits. CRP and wetlands are disappearing and eastern SD is about to look like SW MN. Without any cover in the winter, birds die like crazy. That is especially true during the rough winters like this last year. Flooding only wipes out nests if the flooding occurs late. Even around Pierre I saw plenty of broods this summer. Almost hit a little guy that decided to take his first flight in front of the truck. Numbers are thick out west by areas like Kennebec where everyone farms for pheasants. The black cloud shadows the east more than anything.

Try hunting in iowa with the numbers we've been having the last 5 years, be happy you can still get out and seen enough birds to make it worth your time
