Not sucks, socks. What are some good brands of socks for cold weather to use inside your hunting boots? I'm not talking Granpops old reamedy or plastic bags. I was wondering if anyone has tried something good from gander mtn, cabela's, or even underarmour. I've been looking for a while and have not found something that catches my eye. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

get a good synthetic thin liner sock to breath and protect from itch and put a high quality pair of wool socks over them. i use this combo in really harsh cold and or wet conditions. |

A good pair of wool socks as an outer sock to provide warmth and insulation and a polypropylene liner as an inner sock to wick away perspiration and reduce friction. You might take a look at some of the hiking socks on the market. Campmor is a good place to look for hiking and backpacking gear. http://www.campmor.com/But then again, you said you didn't want Grandpops old reamedy, so never mind, let your feet freeze. |

A pair of thin fleece socks under a pair of 100% wool. I wear a size 9 shoe I buy size 13 LaCrosse boots. this way I can add a layer or two of fleece socks. The worst thing you can do(besides wearing cotton) is layer up to the point the boot is tight fitting sure way to have cold feet while on stand. Learned the hard way. If you can't wiggle your toes you can't keep blood circulating and stay warm. |

My standard is adapted from my uncle who was a navigator on a hyper-drafty B24J: first, silk to wick and keep wrinkles smoothed out(polypropylene would be a modern option as well), then thick 80-100% wool(hand wash). Mine are Cabela's or knit by my mother-in -law. Boot suggestions above are good. Over boots are also an excellent idea if you are not moving around much, even the old buckle type rubber boots make a big difference. |

I bought a package of merino wool socks at Costco. I usually can't wear wool but these aren't ichy at all. I wear these with my regular hunting boots. If it's real cold out and I have to wear my pacs, along with the merino wool I'll also wear some poly sock liners. Works for me. |

I buy all my socks from Walmart, the only socks I buy are Wool Socks, Remington are about the only one's made in America, I have tried about every combination to try and keep my feet warm, the only thing that has worked is Wool Moisture Wicking socks, wool is the only material that will keep your feet warm when wet! I have had a problem for years with cold feet when hunting, since I started wearing only Wool Socks my feet have not gotten cold! You could also buy your boots two sizes larger then get a felt insert like is used in the Sorrel Boots that is the same size as your foot, that way you only need a couple pair of socks! My Boots are size 11 and I use a size 9 felt liner with two pair Wool Moister Wicking Socks, that combination works Great, haven't had cold feet since!

I too have bought the Remington and Rocky socks at Wal-Mart. Otherwise if you can't find socks at Cabelas' I don't know what to tell you. |

Bought 2 pair of alpaca wool socks last year at the sportsman's show in Rockland County, NY. Wore them "out" this past hunting season and I'm hoping the vendor is at this years show so I can buy more!! My feet stayed dry & warm without the wick a way liners. "Hyper drafty B24J" has to be an understatement!!!! Thank you to your Uncle for his service! |

I agree with JBurring.... look at socks made from alpaca wool. Wife and I use them while milking in the barn (standing on cement in sub zero temps -- and she wears only tennis shoes while milking... I used mine last season while hunting - 5 hours on stand in the same spot - in the snow, and my feet were fine. Be aware they do make different weights of the alpaca socks, some are like hunting/hiking socks - others are more like dress socks. Alpaca wool compared to sheeps wool is 20% warmer, 20% lighter by weight and naturally hyper-allergenic (doesn't itch...)

Hunting sucks without hunting socks. I just had to say it. You have to be comfortable to be able to hunt and that includes your feet. Thin moisture wicking underlayer socks and heavier oversocks are definately the way to go. When I buy a new pair of hunting boots I always buy from a local store so I can try them on and I always take my sock combo along and buy the size of boot that is comfortable on my feet with the several layers of socks otherwise hunting sucks without hunting socks. |

Exactly what DWEST mentioned. If you have a good insulated boot, you won't have to worry about your feet getting cold. I will usually wear a thin layered sock and lighht shoes until I get to my hunting detination, then put on my wool socks and boots. It makes a big difference. |

OK, sounds terrible BUT, I wear a good pair of sweatsocks topped by some wool socks and then a good pair of boots to the stand. When I get there, it is not unheard of for me to swap the boots out for some way too big "booty" type slippers. They let the moisture away and keep my feet warm. |

Silk & wool is the best combination....................meaning, layered - of course.
