If you arent going to shoot much over 100 yards dont over look the .22 Mag. I have a Marlin M-25 little bolt action .22 mag that is a tac driver out to 50 yards havent really shot it at a range over 50 yards but want to try the next time i get out. The last time I had it out I was hiting a nickle size target every shot at 50 yards. It is toped with a Bushnel sport 4 X 12. Just a cheepey from wally world I think it was about $70 The only complaint is that the .22 mag rounds are way more expencive than they need to be.

Hello everyone!

For groundhogs I just use my Savage 110 .270win. There are bullet weights for that from 90gr - 110gr for varmint hunting.  I do not know if there any bullet weights lower then 90gr, such as 85gr or 80gr for the .270win.

When I used my .270win I had used regular 150gr or 130gr rounds for groundhogs. Let me tell you, What a mess!! I shot 3 groundhogs all 3 under 50 yards. 1 was blown clean in half, 1 nearly blown clean in half; just hanging by a piece of skin, and 1 hada small going in and softball sized hole going out! Guts every where!!  But after a couple of days, Whew what a STINK!!!  It was so bad it could gag a maggot!!    The Turkey Buzzards and crows had a feast!   Of course mom did not like it very much! She could not hang the wash out for at least 2 weeks!  All that was left was some bones. So even though I am 38, mom told dad and I, we have to use our .22's! Me with my .22S-L-LR, and dad with his .22 mag. Less mess!
