There are a lot of snowshoe hares where I live, and I frequently hunt them. Sometimes as I lift my rifle up to take a shot, a hare will bolt into the surrounding brush for cover. If I lose sight of the hare, I scratch lightly at the checkering on the stock of my rifle. These animals are notorious for sitting perfectly still for extended amounts of time, but the noise from the scratching makes them flick their ears ever so slightly. Most of the time, this flicking is just enough to give away their position. I have been rather successful with this trick.
