When using the spot-and-stalk method for red fox in open farm country, if you miss a shot and the fox did not see you, it pays to remain where you are and wait. Oftentimes the fox will return to the same general area where it was laying, giving you another shot opportunity. I have had fox run over a hill after a missed shot, only to come back and run right at me. Key to this method is that you must stalk to your shooting position without being detected. The fox, not realizing where the shot came from, will oftentimes come back to investigate.
