Improve Your Grunt Call Strategy
Bring your grunt calls to life with some professional advice.
POSTED BY: David Hart
September 21, 2011
You've tried tempting bucks into your kill zone with grunt calls, but haven't managed to spill any blood. Consider some expert tips before you retire your grunt calls to your hunting junk drawer.
Many of the same reasons rattling works—or more specifically, doesn’t work—holds true for grunting. As renowned whitetail biologist Dr. Mickey Hellickson determined, soft rattling is far less effective than loud, aggressive rattling. With that in mind, consider just how quiet a grunt tube really is and consider the various factors working against you. No matter how often you blow on a grunt tube, there’s a good chance no buck is within earshot.
During extensive testing and trials, Hellickson actually pulled in a few bucks with only a grunt tube, but he typically incorporated one into his rattling sequences. That’s exactly what Knight & Hale Game Calls Special Promotions Manager Jim Strelec does, too.
“Bucks grunt year-round, so there really is no wrong time or place to use one. I describe it as a way for bucks to look for each other. ‘Here I am. Where are you?’” he explained.
Most of the time he’ll offer just a quick grunt or two, but as the rut draws nearer, he’ll start using the tending grunt—a series of grunts Strelec compares to a winded child who is trying to talk while attempting to catch his breath.
“It’s almost as if bucks are grunting as they inhale and exhale, they are so excited,” he said. “They do it as they are chasing a doe, but I will also throw in grunts between rattling sequences to add more realism. I also grunt between rattling sessions the same way two fighting bucks would communicate between blows.”

I am a kentucky whitetail hunter and I hunt in deep woods, old and new.I have tried many methods and I have learned to call loud with no consistency. Also agree with rattle and grunt combos, while more aggressive in the rut. This stuff works.Be aggressive when the game is in rut.

I have used a grunt tube many times but never successfully but I know that other hunter have success with them. which leads me to believe that I am just not grunting right... I would like to hear some audio of some one who realy knows what they are doing so I can try it with my grunter. tell you what I have had some good results with though and that is the doe bleater can that I have It works like magic and Im not haveing to blow thru a tube so its a no brainer... though you never know if the buck that is making his way to you is a shooter or not because you are giving an invitation rather than a challenge. At least that is what I think is going on.

I am from south carolina and I have used my grunter and from my experience it sometimes works and sometimes dont. I have tried to immitate the deer and didnt have much success maybe because I didnt have the right tone or something, but I have also tried changing it up and make it sound a lil weird and the curiosity of the deer get the best of them so they come to see what the grunts are all about. At least thats how it is down here where I live. Try that and see how it works for you.

i am from michigan. the grunt call and rattling horn really works. i have killed three nice bucks in the last two years using these calls. the biggest buck i shot on holloween last year was in a crp field 100 yard away. the grunt tube brought him within 20 yards after he heard a few grunts i threw at him. the year before, oppening day of shotgun season, i had just finished rattling and not 5 minuted here came a nice 8. use these calls to your advantage and good things will happen.

Hi All, I'm Bucky from Illinios. I use a grunt and also rattle. When I rattle I first do so from my stand. Then I let my antlers down on a rope and let them hit the ground and brush around my stand. I try to make a lot of noice, as if two bucks are going at it. Works better that just rattling from a stand.

I have learned over the years that blind calling with a grunt call works very well. For those of you that say that you haven't had much success, stay with it. When you blind call, as a suggestion, grunt a couple times with about 3 seconds in between. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes before grunting again. Watch down wind. Some will respond, that most hunters never see. During the rut, stay with it. Just remember sometimes, you can call to much. I like to blind call just as a buck is searching for that doe. Then after some time, "can" call. That estrus bleat after a series of contact grunts, will be more than that buck can stand. Stay with it. It works

This is Peter from Illinois and the proof that grunting/rattling works is on the wall. Listen how they grunt on all those hunting shows and that will give you something to get started with. Space your sequences 20minutes apart and be patient.

Hi. My name is JP from NE Ohio. I have tried grunting and rattling. No luck with either. Sometimes it seams that I'm better off doing nothing. One day it may happen, that a shooter buck comes in.

I'm from minnesota and I know there are a few little things that help along with grunting, bleating and rattling. Such as scent trails with buck or doe urine, and doe estrous for the rut. Also cover up or eliminate your human odor. Anything to make your set up as life-like as possible. Pay attention to the little things and success will follow.

TRUE STORY. I USED A GRUNT CALL 1ST TIME ,DIDN'T STOP TO THINK.I'M IN NOR. MAINE. THE DEER AND MOOSE RUT OVERLAPPED THIS PARTICULAR YEAR. AS I COCKILY TRIED MY NEW-FOUND TALENT, I RECEIVED AN IMMEDIATE ANSWER.TO MY VERY HUGE SURPRISE,A VERY LARGE BULL MOOSE RESPONDED.HIS RESPONSE WAS NOT VERY NICE.AND TO TOP IT OF NOT EVEN MOOSE SEASON. NEEDLESS TO SAY I LOOKED FOR A TREE TO PUT BETWEEN US. AFTER A FASHION HE STARTED TO WANDER OFF.BUT......I COULDN'T HELP MYSELFAND GRUNTED AGAIN.HIS REACTIONS WERE SO FUNNY THAT I DID THIS 4 OR 5 MORE TIMES.THE GRUNTS DO WORK AND IF A BUCK TAKES OFF AFTER WINDING YOU GIVE IT A DANCE,9 OUT OF 10 TIMES THEY CIRCLE BACK TO STOMP ON THE INTERLOPER.

first off rattling only works were there is a good or high buck to doe ratio.i would think twice if you were hunting in places were not alot of bucks reside.the grunt on the otherhand is one of the best tools a bow hunter can carry. it works every time if used properly i have killed many of bucks thanks to my grunt tube.the doe bleat used with the grunt also very effective.the key is do not blow it when the deer is headed your way or if you know he heard it .wait til he is out of sight. most times he heard it and is circleing down wind.if i forget my grunt tube it definitly reduces my chances.it is one of the most important weapons a bow hunter can have right up there with my bow! at least here in massachussetts anyway .HUNT ON!!!

i have had more luck with no calls than using calls. i hunt in harris county ga and i have only been hunting now for about six years and have taken 12 bucks only about three with calls. i have taken some pretty nice deer just scotting and pretty much not making a sound. i use to be on a lease but the leader or lease holder would change rules to suit him and his son so i got out and have been hunting pretty much in my neighbors back yard , in which the first year i took a nice 225lb 14 pointer and a py ball 10 pointer with some nice mass. have to say me leaving the lease was a blessing. i have played with a few calls when seeing does and little 4 pointers and they either dont acknoledge or run off. in which case i do use alot of attractants. love that tink 69 during the rut and some doe p off season. i think its pretty much being in the right place at the right time. and lots of patience. good luck hunting.

I live in Vermont. Last year muzzleloading I had a doe about 200 yds out and gave the grunt call a blow. The doe looked up and started to head in my direction. After a few and I had close some of the distance I gave a second blow and she came toward me, across the front of me at about 60 yds and when she stepped out from behind the tree she felt the pain. Thought I missed because she bolted across and away for about 50 yds. It was a heart shot. But while waiting after the shot and deciding what to do I had another doe to my left at 50 yds watching me. Needless to say I did a flustered reload and started looking for a buck. Nothing else seen and then I found the doe down. Nothing the entire early part of the season as far as getting a buck to answer the grunt calls. Going to try the rattling and calling more this year, sounds like have little to lose.

I'm from Iowa and I will guarantee you that grunting and calling works. many a time my son and i will take a stand within 50 yards or so of each other and right at sunrise or just a little befor he will start a series of grunting and smashing antlers together and 10 to 15 minutes later start all over again (he is totally concealed) every once in awhile I will throw in a grunt call or doe call. Last year he brought a 10 in from over 300 yards and at the last minute I could see the buck was hesitant and I hit a soft grunt (enough to turn the buck directly at me and broadside to Ryan) his arrow smashed him at 25 yards (a perfect shot) very short tracking job. All from the ground and in mid-Ocrober. Good luck this year!!!!!!!!!!!

I am in the army and have hunted southern IN where I grew up, Ft. Campbell, Ft. Bragg and now in Ft. Stewart. I have used a grunt call for both bucks and does for almost 30 years. It works. Blind calling or when u c a deer. I usually use a doe bleat, but for bucks during the pre-rut aggressive buck grunts w/or w/out rattling has given success. Also, bucks come to doe bleats and if a doe comes in, what better decoy that a live deer? I usually give a 2-3 grunt or bleat series every 15 minutes or so. If they are in sight, wait until their head is behind a tree. From a stand, don't call if they are w/in 30 yards or so, they can tell where it comes from and know they can't climb trees!

I use the uproar by Primos. It has a grunt, bleat and snort wheeze. once you figure out how to use it the deer really come in.

I hunt in Michigan and a few years back I tried the grunt call along with imitating a buck rubbing on a small tree and scrapping the ground by using a large stick that I picked up from the ground. A nice ten point came to investigate the ruckus and caught me off guard. It will work if it is the right time of the season.

I hunt in North Carolina and I've had a lot of success with the Bone Collector grunt/blow call than any other one. It has really paid for itself I killed an 8 point on my stand that scored 124 1/2'' within 10 mins of being in it last year and I didn't bait up all year, and a day later killed a big 6 on the same stand. Hands down the best 20 bucks I've ever spent! The best time to use it is early of a morning, and in the middle of November during early rut.

I hunt in central Kansas, and the combination of rattling and grunt call work excellent. I start off with rattling, very aggressive, followed up with grunt calls. Wait 15 minutes. If nothing, just repeat the same sequence. It has always worked. just be patient.

I hunt in michigan around the greater lansing area. I have had great success calling deer in with my primos buck roar and using rattle horns. I rattled a nice 2 and a half year old 7 point scrub buck from 200 yards away. watched him walking the woodline hitting his scrapes. decided to give my horns a shot and sure enough it was a calm enough day that the sound caught his attention. he came 50 from me I used my grunt and he came perfect broadside 20 yards from me. 40 yards later i was holding his nasty rack in my hands. I believe that calling and using the right technigues works. I just found they worked by trying them. I believe in the grunt/rattle when i go out for bow.using calls during gun season is a different story.

I had a buck walk away from me last week in Missouri, which was October 22nd. I used the snort/wheeze call from Primos. It brought him back into range. It's the second time that I've used it on some big bucks and it worked great.

I hunt on public ground in west central Illinois, and find that a combination of grunts and doe bleats about once every 45 min to an hour works best. Because of heavy hunting pressure on this land I never rattle, I am sure it scares them more than attracts in heavy pressure areas. I leave it up to the other hunters and just a few grunts and beats from me. This paid off this year and I dropped a nice 8 point buck, that scored 166 Boon and Crockett points, who came right in at 15 yrds. Grunts do work in heavy pressure, just dont do too much or the big bucks know your a hunter.

I have tried a grunt and a rattle on different occasions with no luck. I have seen bucks within 50 yards and tried to call them in with out even a glimpse my way. I guess i will just stick with lady luck, i have shot a buck each year for the last 3 years, with the rack getting bigger each year so i'm happy.
