On-The-Hoof Photos: Minnesota's New Record Shed Antler Buck
A suburban Minnesota whitetail recently set the state's record for shed antlers. Now see photos of him on the hoof.

It has been all over the news in the outdoor community: The Minnesota state record shed whitetail antlers that were discovered in Excelsior, Minnesota, by resident Jay Miller. According to official measurers who scored the antlers at a northern Minnesota sport show in February, 2011, the right antler scored 91 3/8 inches and the left antler scored 89 5/8 inches.
In the fall of 2010, the "Excelsior Buck" was captured on video. A few photos of the buck on the hoof have circulated, but chances are you haven't seen these ones.

North American Hunting Club Member Benefits Director Doug McDougal lives near Exclesior, so when he got wind of the video last year his curiousity peaked. "I started asking around," McDougal said. "Turns out the buck was feeding at my buddy’s deer feeder and it was bedding down in his backyard."
McDougal stayed in touch with his friend, who was planning to hunt for the buck's shed antlers when the time was right. "One of his neighbors [Jay Miller] beat him to it," McDougal said.
McDougal's friend was able to capture these rare on-the-hoof photos of the Excelsior Buck. Locals believe the buck is still alive, but can only speculate about how his antlers will shape-up in 2011. Either way, McDougal remains optimistic: "We’ve got plans for next year’s shed hunt."

Wish I could take that Shot, but then I would like to kill my first buck, any decent size would really do, preferrably a beautiful typical Eight

Nice. We hope for 140" deer around here, and settle for 120". To see something like this walk by, I'd probably have to let him walk, in hopes he would breed about 10,000 does!

Leave him be! Let him bred. Better crop in the long run. Keep taking pictures.

If he's older than 4, take him. His offspring will keep his genetics going. Most 5 Year old and older bucks don't breed all that many does up here anyway.

I think that's an awesome buck and would compliment anyone's wall with beautiful buck like. But, by letting him live a few more years would improve the quality of deer with his genes being spread out by other deer in the area.

bucks like this are literally all over, and in many numbers. but the average hunter just does not see them in the wild for many different reasons. but when you have a troth filled with corn, that makes things a little and i mean a little bit better odds.

To wildhart: New York State would love you, esp on baiting. In my area all the bucks are small horned. Would love to see just one like this baby. We have food plots done by several local hunters who have the land to do it. I just sit and watch. My food plot is well away from my stands. I like it that way. Still hunting is the best.

yes very nice indeed. but there are bucks that everywhere in the u.s. mostly on private land. But I myself have taken a few nice bucks in Mi. where I live on stat land, it's hard work but I love it more than life itself

He is quite an exceptional fellow, I work on the railroad in S.D. in the river bottoms where the tracks run in many different states you'll see bucks like this and even bigger.

Nothing like northeastern white tails. I've seen deer like this one but never had a chance to shoot at him he was too far away. My muzzle loader's Arm just wasn't that long.
