Second Crack Elk
On the Trail with Mark Kayser
POSTED BY: Mark Kayser
October 21, 2010
I'm deep in the high country of southern Colorado chasing elk at the moment. This is my last chance to put some elk meat in the Kayser freezer before I have to lower my standards to (I can't believe I'm at this point): whitetail! Of course I'm just kidding. I like all of God's creatures on my plate, but I'll be honest. My family has a fondness for elk and pronghorn over any deer.
I'm hunting with my good friend Clay Allison who in addition to running Santa Fe Outfitters also has a successful knife sharpening product by the title of The Wicked Edge .
The elk will be gathering for their migratory run, but this means they are bunched up so there might be some bugling to create a great TV show. I'm hoping they won't be too bunched up.
Trying to shoot a good bull out of a herd of 150 cows and calves is challenging at best.
I'll give you an update next week before I try and get a deer in my backyard of Wyoming.

I'm safe from Kayser as long as I surround myself with the ladies.

I am glad you can afford the hunt. States do not provide for people of my economic status, but I can read about it in the North American Hunter magazine and get excited for you. My hopes and dreams go with you so write an exciting report for me. W. Mason, Teaxs 21 October 2010.

W. Mason save your pennies. Then come to Montana or Idaho. There is a ton of public land, no guide required. Check into their out of state licence and tat prices. You might be surprised. Elk hunting is a blast especially if you archery hunt. Then you can hunt the rut. If you ever get the chance to call elk don't pass it up. It is like calling in a 700 pound turkey!

I have been looking for an elk hunt, but have never done it before and wouldn't know where to start. I am a pastor and I am not rich and so I have all but given up on the opportunity to experience such a hunt. After all even if you go to a state that has elk...if you do not know anyone who can give advice and maybe even hunt with you to show you the ropes I am not sure it could ever happen for me.

Undrgrace, I sure understand the money issue. I am a fixed income guy, so I know what it is like to pinch pennies. Do you archery or rifle hunt? I live in Northern Idaho almost to Canada. I will be leaving tomorrow AM for several days. You can contact me direct at idahogary@gmail.com

I live in Colorado and a native, and am getting ready to go ELk hunting for the 3rd time. I scratching on the door step of 40 years old. Although my tag is only 45 dollars, which you can still get over the counter bull tags, I too have to do DYI hunts, with no mentor to teach me.I guess I would encourage you to learn about how elk behave, visit rocky Mountain National Park during he fall to see how they interact. And when you scout a location in a State Wildlife Area or National Forest in Any part of the Visit this site http://ndis.nrel.colostate.edu/huntingspx.asp?SpCode=051001 to research where to hunt and this site http://wildlife.state.co.us/Hunting/ElkHuntingUniversity/. Plan on walking alot, there is no tree stands, hiking up steep mountains. A non resident tag is $544, so do you research before hand.

Yes, I too know living on ssn. But last I heard we are all citizens of the U.S.. And last I heard all of the states receive federal monies to support their DNR's, forestry, etc.. These mammals belong the citizens of the U.S. not just to any particular state. The out of state tags is rediculas, considering the more money. That would be brought in by the individuals that would like to hunt other states. So I tell you what, I want every state to refuse federal money in the furture. And all the fuel tax that goes to the state. When a watercraft or atv or any off road vehicle that is pulled on a trailer. Have a special button on the cash register, that will make that sales tax go the DNR budget etc. And not into the states general fund, so that the state decides the DNR only gets 1 or 2, or 3 percent of that fuel tax. To fund the DNR.
