Q: I have psoriatic arthritis that has drastically affected my entire hands, and especially my fingers. I’m forced to use a Choate stock with a pistol grip on my Remington Model 1100. I also have a Winchester Model 12, 16 gauge shotgun that I’d like to use but can’t due to my hands. I’ve called Choate and a sales rep told me a 12 gauge stock wouldn’t fit a 16 gauge gun. Are there any other options out there for me?–Club Member Doug Pohto / Painesville, OH
A: I feel for you, Doug—both for your affliction and because of the gun-handling problems it presents. I’m confident you can find a solution, but it’s a.) going to be very expensive, and b.) going to be an extensive search. You definitely won’t find any company that commercially manufactures a synthetic stock to fit your affliction and a 16 gauge Model 12. It’s going to have to be a crafted custom stock, probably in wood or laminate. In Ohio, you might find that Brent Umberger in Cambridge can help you. He’s a custom stock maker that can be contacted at (740) 432-1100. Also, consider calling Bob Scoville in Grosse Point Farms, Michigan, at (313) 886-4089. If they can’t help you, Google “custom shotgun stocks” and find someone local. Good luck my friend.–DAVE HENDERSON
