What's The Best Gun For Coyotes?
Shooting Q&A
POSTED BY: Ron Spomer
February 16, 2012
Q: I’m planning to hunt coyotes, and I need to figure out what gun I should use. I own a Winchester pump-action .22 LR and a Ruger semiautomatic .22 LR—both with open sights. I also own a Remington 20 gauge shotgun. I don’t want to purchase a centerfire rifle unless it’s absolutely necessary. Is using this shotgun my best option? If so, what types of shotshells would be best for the job? If not, what caliber of rifle should I purchase to take down a coyote?– NAHC Member Luke Horneck /VIA E-mail
A: Luke, the .22 LR will terminate a coyote if the bullet is properly placed, but rarely beyond 75 yards. This small game round just hasn’t the energy/expansion for consistent, reliable terminal performance on coyotes—which can take a drumming and keep on running. A 20 gauge shotgun could be a more effective killer, but its effective range will be restricted to a maximum of 40 yards, depending on choke constriction and shot size. Use a full choke or an even tighter extra-full choke. Even with that, you’ll be hard-pressed to find pellet sizes large enough to handle coyotes in factory-loaded 20 gauge shells. No. 2 shot is the largest I’ve seen, and this is about the largest shot size that flows efficiently down a narrow, 20 gauge barrel anyway. Coyotes are best hit with a dense charge of BB or T-shot. This leaves slugs in the 20 gauge, but you’ll need a rifled barrel or at least a rifled extended choke tube to gain sufficient accuracy past 50 yards for these critters.
Luke, if you like to hunt, you are going to love coyote hunting—so why not set your sights on a centerfire rifle? I prefer regular weight and even lightweight “deer hunting” rifles. Think Remington M700, Winchester M70, Savage bolt actions, Weatherby, Mossberg, Browning, Tikka, Ruger, etc. For coyotes and smaller critters, get one chambered in .204 Ruger, .223 Rem. or .22-250 Rem. If you think you’ll hunt deer some day, get a .243 Win., .240 Wthby., .25-06 Rem., .260 Rem. or something in that class; they make great dual-purpose rifles. But if you can’t afford a new rifle this year, use what you’ve got. It’s quite possible to call coyotes within 20 yards where your .22 LR and even 20 gauge shotgun with No. 2 shot will light ’em up.

Using a handgun or a bow is good fun too, and good practice to boot. I sometimes use my AR-15 (.223/5.56mm) or my son's 7mm-08 for them as well. Have fun...

Hey Luke,
Welcome to the exciting world of dog hunting. I agree with Ron and say if a centerfire rifle fits into your budget, go ahead and get one. I use a Savage 22-250 and it is a great slayer of song dogs. I've reached out as far as 658 yds and it had plenty of kinetic energy to drop him dead in his tracks. My son has "rolled" a couple of dogs with his 20-gauge Charles Daly pump at about 35 yards and we used no. 2 shot as Ron recommended, so it certainly is a viable option for close range work. Anyway, you'll love hunting this great game and wish you the best of luck.

Hey Luke, Back when I was a youngster, it used to be quite a challenge getting a coyote to come to call close enough to get a crack at him with my old Springfield .22. Now that I'm an old guy, I treated myself to the Remington 700 VTR in .22-250 caliber. It's every bit as fun, just not near the work. 5 or 6 hundred yards is not out of the question. However be prepared to drop some cash. Good luck!

I use a 20 ga. Mosberg Shotgun to hunt Coyote's. I use No. 2 or 00" buck (Where legal).Forty yard shots(As with Turkey)are possible. You also can get Rifled slugs for use during Deer(Gun) season. The range with slugs is 200 feet dead center, and 100 yards with 8 inches drop. The slug is 240 grains, and will kill at 100 yards if you shoot 8 inches higher than where you want to hit. I hunt where I live in Greeneville,Tennessee. We have bad Coyote problems. So If you want to kill Coyote head to Greeneville, Tennessee. I have killed a lone, old,Male Coyote at aproximatly 50 feet While I was setting on the ground. The Coyote did not wind me and he was not running. I called him in using a cottontail distress call. It was as easy as a turkey hunt. 10 min. walking to whereI set up. 5 min. calling. And 15 min. draging my kill back uphill. I got to the top of the hill 5 min. before sundown. It was a one shot kill to remember. I have it's hide by the way. But I don't have any pictures. (My mother had the camera) The hide is 3 feet long by two feet wide.(Aprox.) Good luck, Josiah J. Ottem

I use a .22 mag exclusively and have had great success. I drop them at 100 yds. routinely. It is not as expensive to buy or shoot as a centerfire rifle but still has the needed distance.

Luke,
Just to put my two cents in. The .204 Ruger that Ron mentioned is an awesome shooting gun. You are looking at Velocities between 3600 and 4200 fps depending on the bullet weight. With the middle of the road bullet (40gr) you are still looking at right around 400 ft.lbs. of energy at 500 yards, and with ayour Zero at 300 yards, you are not quite dropping 30 inches at 500 yards. If your like me, you may never shoot at a 'yote at 500 yards and expect to hit him, but it is always nice to have a gun that can shoot better than the shooter! My vote is for the .204!!!

HEY LUKE, GONNA SAY WHAT YOU'll SOON FIND OUT YOURSELF, HUNTIN YOTE'S IS A BLAST. I USE A REMINGTON 700 VTR .204 AND ITS A TACK DRIVER. BUT IF A CENTERFIRE ISNT IN THE CARDS THIS YEAR BY ALL MEANS DONT LET THAT SLOW YA DOWN. WITH A GOOD RABBIT SQUEEK YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM PULLING ONE IN WITHIN RANGE TO TAKE EM' DOWN CLEAN WITH WHAT YOU HAVE

Hey Luke, just my opinion you don't need big power you need speed. The coyote is quick and your best and most accurate and least expensive centerfire is a Rem. .222 it is super fast and and deadly even at 200yds.w/80gr. Nice rifle.(VarmitMaster)you can pick one up for 150-200 w;scope @gun show pawn shop. Will definitly solve your problem. Also a great for Deer, hogs, and Other game.that is my opinion from experience. I own 2. Good Luck. God Bless. Gabino Arizola

Hello Luke: I also have a couple of 22 LR RIFLES. iT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT THE AMMUNITION DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. For maximunm killing power I would suggest that you use a CCI 22LR STINGER. It is the hottest and fastet rimfire that I have ever seen. It is hot enough to take a deer at 50 yrds. They are all hollow point and have a stainless steel cartridge and the powder in them are different than the conventional powder in the regular 22 bullets. Have fun on your next outing and try that ammo if you have not purchased a center fire rifle yet. Russell

Hi Luke, You have alot of good suggestions here. They are right on trak too. A 22 lr can do fine on the yotes if they are close. carlson's makes a choke tube with coytotes in mind and can help you get a little extra range from the ol 20. Ceck out their "Dead Coyote" choke. Go figure. A good cottontail distress call will bring them into range. Be sure to be camoflaged well and keep your eyes open. Don't be surpised to have other preditors slip in on you as well. I have a friend who had a racoon slip into his blind with him one evening. Cottotail calls are good pretty much everywhere in the coutry. As you get more and mre hooked on them, you can move to other calls as well. When your ready, pick up a nice 243 and use it for dual purpose too.

You can use your 22lr, i do. but like it has been said, call em in. The CCI's work great. But I'm a picky shooter, ive let quite a few go by, but if i pull the trigger somethins hittin the ground. If youre tryin to reach out and get em, a broad-side shot is gonna leave you with a long walk trackin. Its all about shot placement,no matter what you hunt or what you hunt with.

I have killed a few with a .22lr using aquilla 32gr hp with 1750ft/sec and they kill just fine in my marlin 60. I do prefer my howa 1500 .223 with DRS reloads and 55gr hornady v-max bullets though for the long shots..I take my winchester 1400 12ga along with 00 or 000 shot 2 3/4 as a backup. Love calling them in AND MY 6YR OLD SON LOVES GOING AS WELL...

i like my remington m700 30.06, i just use different bullets for different game, 125gr. for predators, 165gr. deer/elk, 180gr. moose/beer. one gun that does it all. and if you get that stubborn dog that won't come in closer than 600yds, he can still be dropped, just make sure you have a good scope

Hey luke coyote hunting rates almost as close to deer hunting its very exciting and you must outsmart one of the smartest animals and cunning shot gun is ok but i like to reach out at them i shoot a 223 remington and drops them on the spot with a good shot of course. Calling them in is much more exciting then useing dogs to chase them! I think u need to reach out and touch them the smart ones always seem to hang up at about 250 to 300 just watching! 223 great gun dont ruin much and is plenty for yotes and other little critters as well !

Use what you have. Don't buy if you don't have to. If you can kill a deer with what you have don't buy a thing. Here in Tennessee it is legal to kill coyote while hunting deer with a legal deer hunting weapon or device. Good luck with killing your first.

Also a 20 guage can be used to kill big game out to 100 yards with an 8 inch drop. At 200 feet it is right on the mark.

Hi Luke, well it seems like everybody has a opinion as to whats best for the coyote. I own a 204 riger but don't use it for coyots, too light a bullet and not enough energy. I also own a Howa .Hvy. bbl. .223 which works pretty good,my favoriate dog gun is a Mdl. 70 winchester Hvy. Bbl. 243 Varmint. I use a sierra 85 gr HPBT bullet in front of accurate 4350 powder. It bucks the wind better and is devestating on impact. You can pick one up at a gun show and it also makes for a nice deer rifle . No matter what you choose bullet placement is the key to success. Makes no difference how fast you miss. One shot -one kill is my motto. Happy - safe hunting.... Donald Nicholson

Luke, i prefer to use a .243 remington to hunt dogs....i dont know what kind of terain you have where your from but i have long sight lines on flat open terain and i like the chalenge of reaching out and touchin animals on my hunts.....i have actually used a bow before with a rabit in distress call and thats lots of fun......if your on a strict budget for puttin in for a centerfire rifle you can browse local gun shops and they usually have good deals on used rifles in great condition

You could use a variety of different cal. guns, but for rimfire, the .22 mag or the .17 hmr would be my choices. I own a .17 and it takes them down just fine as long as you have a good scope. But if you could, you should get a centerfire such as a .204, .223, .243, .25-06, or anything in between their. But with a well placed shot, the .22 lr or the 20 guage should do the job.

I love the 204ruger. But if you are hunting in the wind that round is pretty much worthless. If you are looking into a new rifle I would go with a 223, 243, or a 22-250..but if you are not worried about getting them mounted or saving the hides use something that does damage..between a 25. and 30. cal rifle

Luke; if you can save up, get a H&R or NEF single shot in .223 and top it with the BSA 223 scope. We have a similar setup but with a TC Contender for the wife's coyote gun. Have suggested similar setup for my father-in-law out in Saskatchewan. Should be a great package for under $500. Good luck in whatever you choose!

Hey Luke, there are many calibers to choose from to shoot yotes as you can see. I use a Remington 700 in 22-250. A flat shooting round that has a wallup of a punch when it connects and it can absolutely smoke a coyote out to 500 yds. It really depends on if you are keeping hides or not and what else you may be hunting with that same rifle.

HEY LUKE im a canadian hunter and our coyotes are very wary animals here. Ihunt in both urban and rural situations as well as in northern ontario and my parteners and myslf use bows cross bows shotguns and rifles from 22.cal to 30.06 cals shotguns are from 20.gauge to 12.gauge it all depends on where we are at the time. If you are specifficaly calling coyotes I would choose a 17.cal or 223.cal rifle with a good scope for longer range shooting and a 12or 20 gauge shotgun for close range shootinor a good bow or crossbow for close distances you may want to use a compound bow in archery situations as it would make it easier for a second shot as it takes longer to load a crossboe than a comound bow and a coyote is not going to stay in range for long after being shot at. I hope this helps you find the right firearm for you I am a former hunter safety and canadian firearms safety course instructor and have taken over 300 coyotes over 50 years of hunting for them and nearly 170 wolves chris

Hey Luke, I use a Ruger 77/44 and/or my Ruger Super Blackhawk for coyotes. A lot of people think a 44 magnum cartridge is too big. Not for me, I happen to find some thick skinned ones and the 44 barely penetrates. Just make sure you are at least 50-60 yards away. I also use my Mosin Nagant and my WASR 10/63 Sporting rifle. It just is a trial and error kind of thing. Just get a caliber you feel comfortable with. DO NOT get one you just want because it sounds good, I have friends that do that and it is just dangerous.

When I finally got my center fire rifle I had to go cheap to. For the money I very happy with my Savage 243. It came with the scope, bore sighted and was $375. They also come in 270 and 30-06. Find the right bullets and a little practice you pick em off at 300 yards in no time.

Luke if all you have is a 22 LR then use it just make sure you use good judgement on your shots keep them within 50 yards. You should also get in to saving the hides learn how to skin them and. Flesh them then sell them. This will help you make up the money to buy yourself that more effective round and I go for the 204 rugar fur friendly as all get out and it drops them. Down. Have. Fun Ub

Luke, A 22LR will do the job ... but a 22 MAG will up your game big time and keep you in Rim-Fire mode. If your gonna jump the fence I'd consider 22-250 or 243. From woodchucks to coyotes you'll have 300 yrd+ accuracy w/scope. But the ammo is pricey. Its overkill in a way...but very effective. Good Hunting !

thought i'd put in my two cents i own17hmr,204,223,and22-250 all except the 17 work great for yotes just not enough bullet to put em on the ground but my favorite is the 22-250 and it was very inexpensive my scope actually cost more i purchased it at walmart for 280 bucks

Put a flash suppressor on your 22s , double your range & velocity ,and make em tack drivers too ,Set your sites for 150-200 yards and aim for head shots, they will shoot like 22wmrs, and go through body armor just like 22wmrs,To defend your home too !! use cci stingers ,Enjoy your new guns !! cost is about 20 bucks each suppressor, The 22 will no longer mushroom leaving the gun That slows it down and makes it less accurate!!suppressor helps it slide out intact like jacketed rounds, 2 new guns -40 bucks head shots will work on everything and still save the pelts too!! 22s can be used for hunting !!

i would go with a 5.5.6 or as known as the 223 or a 243 if i was gona shoot a rim fire gun i would go with a 17 pretty much depends on what you conford and what you like. im not much in hunting anything with a 22 im a serious varment and preditor hunter i use a 308 sometimes even. i mainley use a dpms ar15 with an 18 inch heave barrel. with a night con special coyottee scope. if your hunting in a heavy brushed area a shot gun is perfect because there gona crawl on top of you anyways. i believe you pay for what you get in guns if your gona buy a savage i would buy either a 10 or 12 series or A remmington 700 and howla makes realy nice rifle scope combos all that matters is what you like and what you can afford ood luck hunting

Luke, I hunt in Tn. I use a25-06 or a 223 or 22LR. in my yote hunts The key is bullet placement.. The next thing is distant to the target.. the closer the easist the kill.. 22LR. is good 75yrds or closer. Use good ammo. I prefer CCI 36 gr hollow point. or winchester super X hollow point... 223 55gr.hollow point.. and 25-06 I like 100 gr core-lock Remington.. Good luck and make each shot count P.Guerra

.243 - best varmit caliber out there. very flat shooting. you can get 100gr bullets for deer & pigs and much smaller bullets (below 60gr) for small game. the smallest bullets will travel above 4000fps and make a nice hole upon leaving the dog.
happy hunting, Luke!
