As hunters, we do our best to pattern the animals we chase, but it’s difficult to break old habits and try new techniques—and we often find ourselves falling into a monotonous pattern. It’s not easy to think outside the box, but sometimes, a hunt’s success depends on it.
Thompson/Center’s “Extreme Pursuits” with Mark Kayser highlights new tactics and new spins on old strategies for successfully hunting big game, particularly hunting trophy whitetails. Each episode will detail a specific strategy—some that are planned and others that develop on-the-fly as a hunt unfolds, yet become the key to success.
North American Hunter “Whitetails” Columnist and Host Mark Kayser is nationally known for his aggressive hunting style, which not only produces trophy animals, but also makes for extremely exciting hunts. Kayser’s unique hunting style produces ground-level, over-the-shoulder views of giant bull elk coming to a call, trophy-class whitetail bucks charging to rattling antlers, and cacti-piercing belly crawling within bow range of a monster mule deer or pronghorn.
In addition, Kayser highlights gear and techniques tips and into each episode during the actual hunt. If you can think of a hinging technique, Kayser has probably tried it—and likely failed a time or two—and therefore uses both successful hunts and blown stalks as learning tools, making “Extreme Pursuits” both educational and entertaining.
One upcoming episode involves Kayser prowling Montana’s Powder River Country in sub-zero temperatures with hopes of rattling in a monster buck. In a different episode, Kayser dodges prickly pear cactus, yuccas and petroleum explorers while stalking southern New Mexico for giant mule deer with his bow.
