Scent-Lok Owes Us An Apology?
On the Trail with Mark Kayser
POSTED BY: Mark Kayser

The U.S. Federal Court spoke and it didn't like Scent-Lok's claim about "odor-eliminating technology" and any other statement that even comes close to that declaration. In fact, the court claimed any such statements were considered false as a matter of law. They also said the statements about being able to reactivate the clothing were also false and the case is now ready for trial in Minnesota. The trial will determine how much is to be paid to each plaintiff in the Minnesota case and the award of attorney fees for the plaintiffs.
Even though this took place in the Land of 10,000 Lakes it will have ramifications nationwide and I'm sure other scent elimination and clothing companies are shuffling their shoes wondering if they are next.
I've tried Scent-Lok and other brands of clothing. I use scent elimination products each season and make sure my equipment has been cleansed as much as humanly possible of human odor. Am I a believer? Yes and No.
I have a tough time believing you can actually eliminate 100 percent of human odor. Animal olfactory organs are just too highly tuned. I do believe you can eliminate much of the odor and for hunting that can make the difference between a shot or the sight of a flagging white tail.
My philosophy has always been to keep clean, stay scent free and hunt from a downwind location. If a buck does get a whiff of me he may not get the whole story and pause long enough for me to get a shot off as compared to not using anything at all.
Do I think Scent-Lok was out to take advantage of the hunting public? I doubt it. They used existing technology to fill a niche hunters were demanding. The science behind the product is sound, it's just that the product was lacking in ample material and a reactivation process to fulfill its claims.
Hey, it's America and I'll be the first to admit I've used a product or two that was questionable in its claims. That said, does anyone know where I can get a refill on my turkey mouthwash. I'm sure my lack of spring success has been to turkeys smelling my bad breath. (Yes, there really was such a product on the market a few years back!)

Somebody please get this hog some Scent-Lok. What do you mean it doesn't work?

The science behind it is sound, but since the reactivation isn't. The garment is worthless from the beginning unless they have it vacumed sealed from the factory and delievered unopened to the user. I'm glad I never had enough money to blow on the stuff.

It used to be "Buyer beware". So now if the deodorant doesn't last 8 hours we will sue them also, when will it stop?

Don't our Federal Courts have better cases to work on? Seems like there are a lot more pressing issues these days. Personally, I do not own Scent-Lok but I do not fault those who do. Like Mark said, I don't think you can be completely odor free so I am meticulous with the washing, bathing, dressing before each hunt. Each of us has our own rituals and confidence "products" for hunting. If Scent-Lok helps get more people out more often, it is worth it. I agree with dallmon ... where does it stop?

It really doesn't matter that much i've been within 5 ft of deer and elk and have never used any scent products. If you choose to think it will work than whatever you get you will praise your products I therefore don't use it i wear my clothes i wear all year long and don't bathe everyday i hunt i have been more successful towards the end of the hunts because i smell more like the woods where i hunt. Roll in the dirt and scrub with pine needles and pine cones then you smell like the other trees. I agree with dallmon WHEN WILL IT STOP..

Really people dont have anything better to do. I have purchaced Scent-Lok before and still use it. You have to store it and take care of it correttly for it to work properlly. If can get with in 15yards of a red fox with it I say it works. Granted I was also using cover scent as well. I dont think if I had on my wranglers and long sleeve shirt on with cover scents it wouldn't have worked. but thats my opinion.

Incredible what some people will go through to sue someone for a quick buck. What's worse is that there are multiple plantiffs. I can only imagine what started all this.... Some hunter wearing Scent-Lok got busted downwind, determined the suit was faulty, and now is suing. For what...reimbursement of the clothing? His tags? Time spent in the woods? How 'bout all the gas money they spent going to and fro? Rediculous! I've never been able to convince myself to spend the money on scent eliminating clothing; but I'm pretty meticulous about washing and using scent eliminating sprays and/or cover scents. Like Mark said, I've been caught upwind of deer, but they didn't have the full "scent picture" which, more than once, caused them to pause long enough for a shot. And, like nschweitzer, I've been on multi-day hunts where I couldn't shower or bath. Hunting into the wind is time tested and free! Honestly, anyone who thinks they can become 100% "scent invisible" is kidding themselves. Now get out and hunt!
