Illegal Aliens and Hunting
On the Trail with Mark Kayser
POSTED BY: Mark Kayser
April 26, 2010
One of the national headlines I read recently discusses Arizona's plan to stringently crack down on illegal aliens caught in that state. I'm all for allowing others into our country to work or visit, but FOLLOW THE RULES!
While reading the article I recalled several of my hunts near the border. In almost every case my hosts warned me to be on the lookout for illegal aliens and taught me a few phrases in Spanish for my safety.
I'd never thought much about running into illegal aliens until I hunted southern New Mexico one year and the rancher said they occasionally spy border crossers sneaking through the chollas. The illegals were on their way north to disperse into New Mexico or regions east or west. He admitted most were good folks just trying to better themselves, but he also added you never know. Drug dealers and human traffickers could also be in the ranks.
Another hunt in Texas a couple years back was even more eye opening to me.
On that hunt I was also taught a few Spanish phrases to advise any illegals I ran into that I was simply a hunter and not to be alarmed at my firearm. I was told to announce this phrase when near shooting stands or if I encountered anyone in the field.
Even more of an eye opener was the discovery of the amount of trash left behind by these illegal aliens. We found countless empty plastic water bottles, black garbage bags, tuna cans and an amazing amount of clothes. The litter was disgusting! While sneaking through the mesquite we even startled a sleeping visitor and when he saw us in camouflage armed with firearms he dashed away like an elk calf being chased by a bear.
Whether you're turkey hunting this spring in South Texas or coyote hunting in Arizona, be aware of your surroundings. Most of the folks crossing the border in the dark of night are nothing to fear, but it only takes one bad encounter to make a tragic story.

While Idaho is not on the southern border, the Illegal Mexican Alien problem spans into our state and many other western states. One issue in Idaho is the large Marijuana grows encountered by hunters during the archery and early season hunts. As a Police Officer I've participated in the investigation of these grow sites, camps, and the Mexican drug organizations responsible for them. As a fellow hunter, remember to always remain aware of your surroundings. You could find yourself standing between a large cash crop and a hard place.

Living and hunting here in Arizona, I can agree with the potential danger and all that trash as well. It is disgusting, and totally out of hand. Frankly, I don't hunt much down near the border anymore because of the warnings of bumping into drug smugglers etc. A rancher and his dog were just murdered by illegals while out on his own land south of here last week, and you would have to be nuts to not pack a weapon even if going on a local hike. It's a real shame, I used to love to hunt the desert areas along there for Coues, etc.

It seems that many are really up in arms at the position Arizona has taken to combat this problem, from the president on down, but if its illegal (and it is) and nobody wants anyone to be aloud to police it, then why make it illegal to begin with...I say, turn em around, ship em back!

I agree with Arizona, it's about time someone has the guts to do something about them. I am sick and tired of all the liberal idiots who think we shouldn't do anything and just look the other way. If we would round up every illegal alien in the country and send them back to where they come from ,crime would go down and unemployment would go down drastically.

What about "illegal" do people not understand? I know a lot of them want to come here to work and they send the money back to their relatives. If the Feds really want to do something, OTHER THAN AMNESTY which I am against, then create temporary work visas to let them come here to work the farms, ranches, etc. At the same time they could apply, if they wanted to, to become a LEGAL citizen.

Just think what a bloc of votes they represent if given amnesty. We would end up a one party country.

Just wait - it's coming! How else can those passing these laws now get re-elected in November? Did you hear about H.B. 2499 - the Puerto Rico "enabling bill" passed last Thursday, 4/29/10 and on it's way to the senate? I agree they should pay taxes for the benefits they receive as a U.S. Territory - but this isn't looking to make Puerto Rico the 51st state for taxes... rather to maintain a majority in Congress to pass more socialistic legislation.
I hope I'm wrong, but too many of the pieces fit this puzzle - and amnesty is next on the current agenda's "To Do" list.

I Live in New Mexico and I have lived a 1/2 mile from the border and let me tell you there are some really good people and some really horrible people that come across. The fence is only a three strand barbwire fence and that is if it is still up or cut. This is really furstrating that I have to work over 40 hrs a week to get by but these people get free food, housing, and medical paid for by the government and then turn around and buy some of the most expensive vehicles that they can find and live in a home that is falling apart, their kids are dirty and rude. Then these people aren't even thankful that they are here. They treat white people like we forced them to live here.

Well here is a new thought on the situation, in Utah you do not need to prove citizenship to get a fishing license only that you have been in the state 6 months. How does that work that an illegal can buy a resident license. Here it is getting to the point that when you go to a local fishing hole it is over run, and hey if they happen to want the spot you are fishing they just move in all around you and push you out.

You should see their faces when the flash from the trail camera goes off. It is hilarious. The problem has been around for along time. I have hunted down South and they even break into the big box stands, one guy had to put a pad lock on his. At other places they would leave the cabin/trailer unlocked with a note in spanish asking them not to trash the place. It is getting worse every year. Most of the cops in Texas do not care either. If one causes an accident they don't get a ticket, and the bad thing is they always provide false insurance. I wish the Texas Gov't would do more. The City of Austin is boycotting Arizona. I wish they would get a clue. What can I expect from a city gov't that is full of tree huggers always wanting to save a snail.
