This past spring, I went Wild turkey hunting with my dad for the first time in our home state of Wisconsin.

On the first morning of the season, my dad and I got into the woods early and put our decoys out and then found a tree to hide next to. My dad started calling after the sun came up and a few seconds later we heard a gobble off in the distance. When we looked up the hill from the valley we were in, we saw two big gobblers coming our way, but as they got closer they started following a hen that led them away from us. We didn’t see anything else the rest of the day.

The following day, my dad and I went back to the same spot we were in the day before, only we switched trees this time. When we got to our spot, it was still pitch black outside, which made it hard for us to find the tree we were going to sit by. When we finally did find our tree, my dad starting calling again and just as the sun was starting to rise, we saw a big, huge gobbler standing right in front of us! A few seconds later, I heard a loud bang from my dad’s shotgun and then I saw my dad jump to his feet. He was shaking really badly from all the excitement!

After my dad’s shot, we walked over to where the turkey had fallen and then we carried it back to our camper. My mom was there so she took some pictures of us and then my dad and I got ready to go back out into the woods to try to find me a turkey. We decided to go to a place we call “Hidden Valley,” and as soon as we got there, my dad started purring with his turkey call. A few seconds later, we heard a turkey call back to us. My dad kept calling and when I turned my head to the side I saw a turkey’s head. As soon as the bird stepped out into the open a little more, I put my gun up to my shoulder, aimed at the tom’s head and slowly pulled the trigger. Bang!

After the shot, my dad and I walked over to my turkey, and as soon as we got it back to the truck, we called my mom so that she could come and take pictures of us.

When we got back to our camper my brother was there and he was mad because he still hadn’t gotten a turkey yet. My dad and I told him we were happy because we not only got to sleep in a little later that morning, but we also both got our turkeys!
