“Get another one on him!” Kelly Wiebe was about as animated as I’ve ever seen him … and it wasn’t helping. Another one? I was pretty sure the first shot had drifted high.

The vastness of the South Dakota grasslands makes finding its feathered occupants a daunting task. This is compounded later in the season, when sharp-tailed grouse and prairie chickens are scattered and flighty. 

Some of the biggest whitetails in North America live on the outskirts of housing developments and soccer fields. Isn’t it time you pay these neighbors a visit?

Jerrod Lile from Montana was recently elk hunting when he and his friend had a close encounter with a grizzly. “All of a sudden my buddy was running toward me.” Lile said. “I looked behind him and saw a grizzly running right at us. I pulled my pistol and was ready to fire when the bear was less than 10 yards away. Thankfully, the bear veered off at the last second. It was a close call.”
