Here we are into the first week of bow and all Ohio members are absent from this site. Use to be we’d start keeping track of sightings and pics. Come on Ohio. I wonder if we can post pics?October 1, 2013 at 10:40 am #5282
Saturday morning my granddaughter and I saw 8 deer. I was giving her the shot but everytime I would get the deer to stop it would be behind a tree. Finally she told me to take the shot. I hit it good, right through both lungs. It could have dropped like a good deer but ran 100 yards into a thich woods that I had drag it out of. What I thought was a nice doe turned out to be a button buck. Big body but no antlers. It will make some good meat. If we could upload pictures I would upload a pic of the buck I am targeting this year. I have watched him for 4 years and I think it’s time.
Happy hunting Buckeyes.October 1, 2013 at 4:18 pm #5336
JP, I’ve had that happen before. We try not to shoot buttons at our club, but sometimes under the right conditions it just happens. Taking your grandaughter out must be a real treat. More folks should get involved like that. My grandkids live in NC and their dad is keeping busy in the USMC. They love to shoot but I’m not to sure they’d be willing to pull the trigger on an animal. We’ll see………. .October 2, 2013 at 8:27 pm #5406
Wifey and I are gonna head to the club tomorrow for a few days to see whats happening in the woods. Been workin on our spot all summer..feeder, food plots, stand location..etc. Gonna be kinda warm……….October 3, 2013 at 6:50 am #5426
bb, this is my granddaughter’s second year to hunt. I am enjoying hunting more now than ever. I didn’t intend to shoot a button and if I would have known I would have let him walk. I saw a big bodied deer with no anlters. Since we are meat hunting at this point in the season I thought this was what we were after. Last year we put 3 deer in the freezer and ran out about a month before season. I will try to put 4 in the freezer this year. Hardin County is a 4 deer county so that shouldn’t be a problem. The woods where we hunting is alnost over populated with deer.October 6, 2013 at 8:17 pm #5760
JP,I’ve been there with the button situation before. I rolled over 60 this year and have been huntin for a good many years. I swear there’s buttons out there, usually large bodied deer, that look like does. Everybody feels bad but it happens. My wife and I are meat hunters also. Use to love taking ‘butter fat’ 6 pts but now in this paticular club we belong to we pratice QDM and are restricted to 2 1/2 yr old bucks. We let more deer pass……kinda hard sometimes. Wifey and I like to have 3-4 in the freezer also. Last year we only put 2 in. Wifey got a nice 10 pt in gun and I took a small doe. Slim pickins. Harrison Co cut back this year on bag limit. Went out this past wkend and didn’t see squat. Thinkin its a bit too warm. Good luck to you and your gran-daughter. Get ‘er a nice one!October 6, 2013 at 8:48 pm #5765
Been trying to put a pic of wifeys 10 pt but not having much luck.October 9, 2013 at 5:40 pm #5983
Wow is right! I certainly wasn’t expecting this big of a change. Took me a while to even figure out where I was, but then again I seem to misplace myself quite often anymore.
Haven’t been out much, not a fan of warm weather hunting. Next week looks a little more promising.
I posted this a few days ago, but apparently the new site didn’t recognize it.October 11, 2013 at 8:49 pm #6168
I agree it has been too warm. Been busy teaching hunter ed though so have been in the mood to hunt since August. Chasing a few big ones as well down in southern ohio. Looking to meat hunt closer to home at this time. Good to see BB is still keeping this Ohio thing going.October 14, 2013 at 10:11 pm #6338
Yeh, good to see you guys found this place. Took me awhile also BB. Wifey and I went to Mohichan State Park Lodge for the week end and did some hiking. Talked to the mx guy at the lodge and he showed me a pic of a buck his buddy had gotten in Richland Co. It’ll be in the papers I’m sure. The thing is just huge. Can’t even guess at the numbers.October 17, 2013 at 7:57 am #7030
No luck in Lake County yet. I am looking forward to the Metropark hunt at Indian Point. I got Nov 11th till Nov 24th. Should be great time slot. It may be a little to warm for deer, but duck season is just around the corner. Happy hunting all, good luck.October 17, 2013 at 10:26 am #7043
Did well on last 2 days of early goose but as usual the first week is just two early. Birds were not ready to fly yet. End of second week geese were just starting to fly. the ones I did get were still in final stage of molting. Like the Idea of early muzzy season but just cannot shoot a doe with yearlings.I Hunt Williams county and Lucas.October 17, 2013 at 10:52 am #7044
I just put the 2nd one in the freezer this morning. Been good hunting here in southeast Hardin county. There is a small lake about a half mile behind me and there must have been 200 geese in 3 flocks up and flying this morning. The guy that owns the land wont let anyone hunt. It needs to be thinned out of deer, geese, coon, just about everything.
Still trying to get my granddaughter her first deer. Moved the ground blind to a river crossing a couple days ago. This is really busy crossing so it shouldn’t be long. She is a great shot so if one gets within 40 yards it’s going to be in trouble.October 20, 2013 at 3:46 pm #7242
Good job JP!
