I got one from my grand father it is stainless steel  and is stamped with 1978  police comemerative stamp on the top.   I was wandering if anyone knows how much it would be worth.

Its worth keeping thats for sure, the date stamp will add collector value. What people will pay depends, personally I would think of it as an heirloom especially if grandad was in law enforcement.

Worth between $375 and $550 depending on shape. PRE-hysteria prices. Probably get 750 for it today. I have one and would NEVER sell it. Too good a weapon. Yours has more sentimental value. Keep it and pass it down if nothing else.

I had one, but a "friend" borrowed it right after hurricane Hugo, and I never got it back. I killed several nice deer with it, and won quite a few shooting competitions with it as well. That pistol is one of the finest ever manufactured by any company.

The Blue Book has it valued at $400.00 in 100% NIB condition, and $250.00 in 95% condition. There is a $15.00 add on for the upgraded grips, and possibly an additional add on for the 1978 police commemorative stamp. If the serial number prefix is in the 150's, it would also indicate a potentially higher collectable value. When this model was discontinued in 1985, it had an MSRP of $385.00. There was also a version called the Police Service Six, that had a slight modification to the grip frame and the butt was changed to a square type with fixed sights. When these models were discontinued in 1988, the MSRP was $285.00, but the current values are identical to the original Security Six.

This is definitely a keeper, since you'd be hard pressed to find a .357 that can match this gun in accuracy and dependability for the money!

I would never sell it unless i absolutly needed the money for life or death kind of thing. I was mostly just interested in how much if any value the police stamp on the top added. Thanks for all the info Havent had much chance to get on here latly glad to see Shy, Big Dog and some of the other gegulars are still around.

I was going to say I do carry it on occasion while deer hunting just for a back up and kinof just to think about gramps. He had 35 years on the M.P.L.S police force and loved deer hunting. He unforumately passed away the summer before my first hunting season.

I like the looks of the security six. I have the GP100, and it's a shooter, but a little heavier than yours. A couple of mighty fine revolvers. My son loves when I bring it to the range. It will be his someday.

We, my wife and I, have a 4" stainless Security-Six with factory Pachmayer "Presentation" grips. It's a wonderful handgun, extremely reliable and accurate. We bought it for her when she was employed as an armed guard for Loomis Fargo Armored service. It's unusual that you have a Security-Six with LE markings as most PD's used the Service-Six,or Police Service-Six as it was also known. They differ in that the Security-Six has a slightly heavier top strap and adjustable sights. There was a third version also, known as the Speed-Six. I believe they were the same as the Service-Six with the difference being in the grip frame, which I believe was rounded. Amazingly even with these fine revolvers being as good if not better than Smith & Wessons of the same size (Ruger has always been known for overbuilding their guns) they only command about 1/2 to 2/3 the resale value. Personally I would rather have a Ruger because the action or clock work is much simpler and less fragile than S&W's and the frames are generally stronger. Granted Smiths trigger systems can be tweaked to be smoother and lighter, but for me, Ruger's is just fine seeing as I don't shoot competition. This is just my opinion though, and opinions are like certain body parts, everybody has one and some smell worse than others.

My Security Six is the Bi centennial Model made in 1976 with a 6 inch barrel. Great handling firearm and has been my backup in saltwater fishing (sharks sometimes need to be persuaded to stop fighting) as well as on terra firma, backpacking, hunting, and hiking. I too have the Hogue grips and now a synthetic holster that fits nice and holds no moisture.
