Went on my first hog hunt Saturday evening, got in my stand around 5pm; watched the largest grey fox I have ever seen but it was when the coons came out I got a littler more attentive to as the hogs usually show up not long afterwards from what I have seen on trail cam. When the coons took off I knew something was up but there was armadillo making alot of noise below me. About 10 minutes after the coons took off something told me to look past my Elusive Wildlife green kill light and I saw a large shadow moving toward it, there was no guessing what that and the second shadow was. I put the crosshairs on the lead hog but they were moving pretty good and I couldnt get the shot I was wanting. Finally after swapping between the hogs trying to get a good shot, the lead one gave me broadside view, I put the crosshairs just behind the ear and pulled the trigger. I didnt realize just how much the hog was quartering away from me but it didnt really matter, the bullet hit just behind the ear and exited just below his left eye, he dropped in his tracks and kicked his legs for about a minute or two. Had a blast in this hunt, the kill light works great and I am really impressed with how well my new rifle and scope performed. Rifle: Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in 308, Scope Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56. Fusion ammo 165 grain. Cant wait for my next hunt.

Congat's great story. I'm wanting to go on a hog hunt myself but here in Ohio they are few and far between. Uless you go to a preserve. I may break down and do a preserve hunt . But thank's again for your story. Do you have any pic's ?

Congrats!! Great story, thanks for sharing...

RK, same here in NY, few & far between, but starting to be of concern.  DEC (fish & game) says to shoot 'em if u see 'em just don't actively hunt them.  They're afraid the pressure would push the hogs out further, faster.

If you have a few there, it will not be long till you have a lot! That is how it always starts, first time I saw any hogs they were over 7 miles away from where I hunt, in three years they were on our property, the first time they showed up on trail cam there were 10 of themn tearing up the food plots. Cant get the pic to upload sorry.

If you are gonna hunt a trophy hog then it will be a boar but if youi are hunting and looking for one to eat i would suggest a sow and preferably a younegr one. The best for eating weigh in around 125-175 lbs. I have both raised hogs on our farm and hunted feral hogs and most that you will find will be feral and not the exotic Russian boars that most people think of. When I am meat hunting a always shoot a small 100-125 lbs sow. You can eat a boar but if he is in rut the likelyhood of being able to eat the meat is slim to none. Even when not rutting if not cleaned and handled correctly the taste will be less than desirable. I speak from personal experience and not heresay or from what I have heard.

It also depends on how you prepare the hog. Ive cooked boars @ 150-200 pounds and they taste like a sal. That is one that hasnt been clipped also.
