I have an older Ithaca Deer Slayer with rifle sights (Not a rifled barrel) and a new Remington 870 3 inch magnum with rifle sights and a RIFLED barrel. I would like to get rid of one or the other & I'm wondering what the "pattern" might look like if I was to use say, 7 1/2 shot in it for partridge hunting. Any one know or had any experience trying to shoot shot loads out of a rifled barrel ??????? Any success in doing so ?? Thanks ! |

At this point I don't know.............it depends on what I find out about patterning with the rifled (unfired) 870. |

Welcome to the boards dublfuzz. I have not tried shooting shot through a rifled barrel, but I would assume the centrifugal force imparted to the shot column by the rifling in the barrel would cause the shot to spread out more resulting in a very sparse or thin shot pattern. |

agreed, very sparse pattern and the center will be almost void of pellet hits. Just as with hand/power tools: The right tool for the right job. ie:shotgun rifled barrel = sabots |
