RT4, I knew you wouldn't care from a religious point of view, but I would think that you might find it interesting from a historical point of view. Heck, it's a rare historical event that is going to occur during our lifetime.
Also, I'm guessing that it may be of interest to others here.

I find it very interesting in that over the last 500 or 600 years, none have given up being Pope, even though they may not have been able to put togather a coherant sentance, or stand without someone holding them up. The only thing that makes them give up being the Pope is death its self, now there is one who is going to step down for a reason other than death. |

Yote, that's a bit rough... You do know that there are Catholic members in these forums right???
Not to be misunderstood, I'm certain you know that I don't approve of the sexual abuse that has occurred within that religion, but don't believe that the conduct is reflective of the many members of that religion overall.
In case your wondering, no I'm not Catholic, and am not involved in any organized religion. That said, I don't condemn an entire religion based on the acts of some that claim to be members of that religion that commit horrible acts.
I can't tell you what you can and can't post but I would like to say that I started this thread because I believe this has an historical significance which is occurring within my lifetime. I didn't start it to have a bash fest on the Catholic religion.

Col LD Potter sir, I must say I agree with you. BUT, now who is geting a little emotion . I thought it was just a little off color so to speak, BUT I did snort just a bit, so I am just as bad as yote in away, I thought of a comment in reply to his post But thought better of it. Because I know there, are those who would not find it funny, and this is a Historic event and important to many. |

lunk ,your right, although it was meant as a joke,it was in poor taste.there is nothing funny about the vatican raping children. I APOLOGIZE for hijacking your thread(but not for the comment). I will try to restrain myself in the future but I make no promises |

I'm Catholic and it was in poor taste but didn't stop me from laughing. Like Momma used to say there's a few bad apples in a bushel. |

I see it as the forced resignation(do you really believe he's doing it because he wants to?) of an incompetent CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate. Certainly it may be historical in retrospect, and possibly even precedent setting. But, other than it's effects on Catholicism how is his retirement relative to the rest of the world? He inherited a pedophile ridden infrastructure from Pope Paul II, who turned a blind eye towards the problems within the Church, and did nothing to rectify the situation. History will not be kind to either one. |

To answer your question yes I believe he decided to resign himself and was under no pressure to do so. The years have not been kind to him and I think he wanted to leave before all he was remembered for was being a feeble old man out of touch with reality. But then again you believe all religions and religious are out of touch with reality. |

Be all right if some of our politicians would follow his example. Hay and he gave 2 weeks notice, and what does a retired Pope do. If there is a retirement found it should be a big one. |

gut, yes I do believe that religion is out of touch with reality, since there is no real evidence to support any religion or it's beliefs. BTW, just as with any other "news" item, there is already rampant speculation that internal Vatican politics and the problems associated with pedophiles in the Church have just as much to do with his resignation as his failing health. |

Rt Faith! As with any person of rank there is always rumor and speculation wether true or not its always there. No proof look around you!!!! But of course science can explain it all can't they? No they can't. Even Einstein's fabled Theory of Relativity breaks down at some key points and no one has figured out why. To this day science agrees on the Big Bang but haven't a clue as to what caused it. To me its simple four words Let There Be Light. Of course the Bible says God created everything in seven days science says it took much longer. But how long is a day to an Eternal Being. Besides a day was a creation of man the earth revolves once in 24 hours. Time seconds, minute, hours, days, and years just explains planetary movement and is arbitrary as the farther you get from the gravitational well time slows down. Time also breaks down with velocity or immense gravity. But given that there is no other world that revolves in that time frame. A day on planet X is six earth days. No its not its one day there. So our conception of a day is an artificial artifact of the planet as is a year. Science accepts dark matter and dark energy yet they can't see it or measure it its just a mathmatical equation. And for all their digging and rooting in the ground there still haven't found what they term the "missing link." |

Now, you are just using the same old religious arguments to justify the words written in a book my men. I suppose the fact that Muslims have the same belief in their Quaran, also makes it the true word of their God; who just happens to be the same one as yours, but instead of faith in Jesus Christ, they put theirs in Mohammed. Don't they have just as much "faith" as you? How about the Hindus and Buddhists and their religious texts and prophets, can you honestly claim that their faith is any less factual than yours??????? Your religion claims that the Earth is only 10,000 years old; but scientific research proves that it is millions of years old. So, at what point do you negate fact with faith???
The whole point is that the Pope is just as much a normal man as any one else, and just because a group of other old men decided he should be anointed with religious power and is God's representative on earth, doesn't make it so. Just as a group of idiots elected Obama to occupy the White House, doesn't set him above you or I. Now if you are a Catholic and choose to believe the Pope is the direct representative of your God, that's your right; but it damn sure doesn't mean that its true!!!! Evangelicals feel the same way about Billy Graham, and some Holy Roller religions feel that way about Jerry Falwell and Jim Baker. I happen to believe they are also entitled to their beliefs, but I don't justify their misguided faith as anything other than being weak minded and lacking the ability to logically think for themselves. That is my problem with faith. It's supposed to provide the reason for not questioning, and when the human race stops questioning, it's doomed. Just as Jim Jones' and David Karesh's followers were.
