Got a chance to introduce my son to the outdoors last weekend. He is just now two and a half. He knows I go hunting but still not sure what it is. After this last weekend he keeps trying to spot ducks for me and wants to go fishing (he thought my shotgun was a fishing pole). I am just excited that he is showing some sort of interest in the outdoors.  Any one else get their young ones involved at a young age?

First off, thanks for working with him early and getting him interested.  This way you can ease him into it, keep it interesting, and teach him proper ethics and methods.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to do so with my two daughters for a number of reasons (which I won't bore you with here).
The elder did express some interest in deer hunting as a pre-teen, but it was just apparently a fleeting thought and passed quickly.  She still has a taste for game meat of any kind, though.  The younger ended up going vegan, but we each respect the others' ways.

Keep up the good work.  Not only for the reasons I mentioned earlier, but also for the precious relationship between you that this will likely strengthen.

He is already showing a lot of interest even at his young age. He really only walked out the hunting location and set up (played with the decoys) and then went home before the blasting began. But he was there while I was cleaning my shot gun and already knows that guns are not toys and even told his grandma and mother not to touch them because they are not toys. He will watch me shoot my bow for hours in my back yard range.

I took him to the Sportsmans show a few weekends ago and got him a few fish from the trout pond they had set up there. We have it on video of him screaming "I caught one I caught one". He now asks me to take him fishing constantly.

On our way home from daycare there are a few ponds that we pass that have ducks in them and he will be pointing them out to me and asks if we can "catch" them and when he hears geese he runs outside with me to watch them.

We will go the Cabela's or the Outdoor Emporium and he can name all of the mounts on the walls Bear, Elk, Deer, Moose and even some of the fish. I think I got him hooked already even though it will be many years before can join me hunting. He already tells me he wants to hunt Deer, Elk and Ducks. Its really funny to watch him get just as excited as I do over those critters at 2 and a half.
