I have an opportunity to go on my first bear hunt ever in Manitoba Canada in May.  I plan to take a gun but would like to use my crossbow if given the opportunity.  Has anyone used a crossbow on a bear and if so, what do you find to be the best broadhead for bear?  Fixed/Mechanical and what is your favorite brand of broadhead for bear. What grain 100 or 125.

If I use my gun, I have a Ruger .270.  What bullets do you like to use?  Grain and Brand  (I do reload but don't mind purchasing a good bullet already ready to shoot.)

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Doug

I have only shot one black bear and that was with my .270. It was a representative boar (not huge, but not a baby either). I used hand loads with a 130-grain Nosler Partition. It was a 90 yard shot quartering away (well he was running). He dropped where I shot him.

So based on my sample space of 1. I would be happy with a 130-grain Nosler partition if they will group with your gun.

Sorry, have no idea about the crossbow. Only have only killed deer with a crossbow.

Thanks so much for the feedback on the .270. I reload with 130 grain Nosler Partition so that makes me feel much better. I've heard some people say that that is not big enough but could not believe it because I know it has done a good job for me with deer. I appreciate your input thanks so much.

been a dozen times took first one with 270 ...just put it where it belongs! On the crossbow use a fixed head been with way too many guys using expandables from crossbows and compounds and ended up with lost bears. My favorite outfitter still wont let them be used even the newest ex heads. Wish you the best of luck..take a camera!

Hey thanks so much. Can you tell me what grain bullet you used in your .270? Also do you recommend a kind of bullet? Where do you recommend the shot placement?
As for using a crossbow do you recommend any particular fixed broadhead? I normally use thunderhead broadheads (125 grain).
Thanks again. I will be taking a camera

I've killed alot of bears in Quebec. I'm strictly a bow hunter and I switched from Muzzy's to 100 grain Rage 2 blade, they were awsome! Bears have alot of fat and if you don't get a pass through, a blood trail is hard to follow, those Rage heads opened the last 5 bears up big time farthest one went only about 60 yards but it was thick and you could have followed the blood trail by feel. Just remember, you can't aim too low on a bear, hit heart sets low in his rib cage, but you do have to take the lenght of his hair into account. Hope this hwelps
