This has never come up here but on but it did on another site. Guys Lab got into rat poison. Fortunately he got the dog right to the vet and they took him in the back. Dog was fine but the owner was charged $350 for the treatment. As many of you know I'm a Licensed Veterinary Tech and I've dealt with this situation a number of times. You can deal with this on your own with a helper. Things you need A piece of flexible rubber/vynal tubing 1/2 inside dia about two feet long. A funnel. A roll of two inch medical tape. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Now with the dog on a table(this makes it easier for you) Have your helper get hold of the dog lying down one arm over his back the other under and around his neck and pulled into helpers chest. Only use as much restraint as needed to keep dog in place. Pull off a foot or more of tape and put to the side. Now the fun begins. Take the roll of tape and put it in the dogs mouth with the round hole facing front to back. Take that piece of tape and tape around his snout to hold his mouth closed on tape roll. Now slide the tubing through the roll of tape and slowly advance into his stomach. If you blow into the tube gently you should hear bubbling in the stomach or smell stomach contents coming from tube. Now put the funnel in the end of the tube and pour in the bottle of hydrgen peroxide. Remove tube untape snout and get the roll of tape out. Now get him outside FAST because pretty quickly he'll puke his guts out. We got four blocks of rat poison out of a Golden this way. Owner said he ate one. There is a drug that sometimes will give the same results but you can't have any. Its called Apomorphine and you put it in the dogs eyes. But, in my experience its not as reliable as the above.

IMHO you shouldn't have rat poison where the dog can get at it in the first place. But as we all know too well sheit happens.

I had this very problem happened to my pup a while ago. My father inlaw was setting out poison when someone showed up for some hay. Well, he didn't think about it and just set the pail of poison down to help the person. Well, during that time someone else showed up and noticed blue stuff in the pup's mouth and knew something wasn't right. They asked and it was concluded that the dog got into the rat poison. They called the vet and they said the same thing, pure peroxide down his throat until he pukes it up. The main thing about this is you have to do this before 4 hrs has passed or something like that, otherwise they would recommend doing something else. Luckily the pup was small and didn't put up much of a fight and out came the crap, and alot of it. They also recommended giving the pup some Vit K which helps thicken the blood because rate poison is just a blood thinner. We gave him a shot of it because we had it on the farm but you can also buy Vit K at a Farm Store or Drug Store that are tablets. It was a pain but alot better than the vet bill would have been.
