Also i have heard not to bring your hunting inside houses because it messes up their scent....any truth in the myth?

I will assume you ment don't dring the dog in the house?  MYTH a dogs scent is affected in no way buy being brought indoors.  However some say (I do not agree)  That bringing a hunting dog indoors breaks down the tolerance for the cold conditions they are exposed to during hunting season.  I have all Chessies they sleep in the house at night in the winter are kenneled outdoors in the day when I am working.  No problem with scent and no problems in wind, snow, Ice, Rain whatever the weather they are on it!  Never had a Golden I do know they are a "Softer" retriever breed but quite the hearty desire to retrieve under any condition.  My theory is if it's to cold for me to stay out all night it's to cold for my dog.  Mine are great bed warmers on a cold night and heat up my layout blind for me as well!  As far as scent goes NO WAY!

OK that takes care of the MYTH of not keeping hunting dogs in the house.

As for obedience training. With a new puppy the first thing is training them the proper place to pee poop if not already house broken. Most dogs will want to go after feeding so put him out right after feeding and watch. When he goes praise him and give him a treat. It won't take long for him to figure out pooping/peeing outside gets him praise and a treat and he'll go to the door on his own when he needs to go. This is pretty much how training goes. Start with sit progress to sit stay. At the sit stay level move farther and farther away when he starts to get up repeat sit stay command. Now to get him to heel you want a good training collar with the blunt spikes. When walking use the command heel and give a gentle snap on the collar. All obedience traing needs is repitition and patience and a box of treats its all about 1 you are the Alpha male 2 reward and punishment. I think its funny when I see some clueless owner is being dragged down the street while HE is being WALKD by his DOG

My dog is a good hunting companion and she is a house dog.

For training your puppy www.gundogsupply.com or www.dogsafield.com are good websites for finding training programs to follow if you don't want to use a pro.  www.retrievertraining.net is a good website for getting information as well, though like anything you need to sort through the garbage and find what works for you.

The first six months are time to bond with your puppy, teaching them how to behave in the house, around people and other animals.  Basic obedience is started, usually using treat rewards at this point and lots of enthusiastic praise when they do things right.  Potty training is a gradual process started with taking them outside after waking up, drinking water and eating.  After exercise or playing is also a good idea.  Complete bladder control usually isn't there until a puppy is about 4 months old, ask your vet when you have it in for a check-up and shots.  Introduce your puppy to a crate using treats so they associate it with good things.

If your retriever is going to be a gun dog, you may want to find a retriever training club in your area to work with.  There are clubs all over the country.

Good luck and enjoy your pup,
Paula

Sorry for the long winded reply about the MYTH.  got lost there.  I totally agree with P Johnson. The 1st six months are critical to a pups demeanor.  You are in charge( Alfa) no matter what.  Any undesirable behavior needs to be corrected immediately.  Sit and Here should be your concentration at this point.  I do not use stay.  First off sit rewarded with praise as a young pup deters jumping on people.  Here taught at a young age keeps pups safe.  What ever you do, do not CHASE THE PUP!  it becomes a game to them.  If the pup is running from you get the attention directed back to you Via whistle or whatever and run away from the pup.  Make it chase you then turn yourself towards the pup keep backing up and praise the little guy for chasing you when he gets there tell him "GOOD HERE" lavish him with affection.  Use a crate for the house breaking just don't use the crate for punishment.  If the pup is to be unattended crate it don't give it the opportunity to get in trouble and you will be O.K.  Personally I do not reward my dog with treats just praise but lots of folks do just don't overdo it for health reasons!  Good luck I'm sure you'll be just fine.  Keep us updated!

Gut and I have had this disagreement for years----I do not use "Stay", just "Sit"
If your dog was kennel raised til old enuff for you to take possession, it thinks it shud "go" do its "business" outside....not watching or leaving in house too long will break it from natural instinct to "go" outside.
My Ol Abe, BLM, is asleep in sun by dining room door just now....he will be 11 in AUG. He doesn't hear hardly at all, eyes are still quite decent on marking, and his nose still amazes me.....and he spends his daytimes in house with me and I smoke! He spends his nights in a pen unless it is into low 20's (or raining which he does not like and I respect), he then gets to sleep in garage where I have his travel crate....he sleeps in it because it is a "home" to him...with door tied back by bungee cord....just where he wants to go.
Ol Abe's first command was "NO!"......at about 2 months...he doesn't chew on anything, try to get on furniture, jump on guest, but he does crotch sniff which I never tried to break him of--thought it funny, and he never "goes" in "his" house which includes his pen! I have seen him pee for almost five minutes after I was late in letting him out.

BTW, in spite of nutrional advances over last ten years, I still use same "treat" I have always used----I say "GOOD DAWG!"

I think this business of keeping dogs outside to harden them was invented by a guy with a wife who didn't want a dog in the house. All of my dogs have slept at the foot of my bed( NOT in the bed). They have done what I asked them to, to the limits of the training they have received. They do NOT get on the furniture.
Training. Obediance is mandatory. Most of my dogs have gone to a puppy obedience school. The pet stores and and agility clubs put them on. Good investment. A dog that won't sit, come, stay, and heel reliably, is worthless. Ever seen a guy standing in the field or marsh yelling his head off at his dog? DON'T BE THAT GUY!
Try this, bang on the dish with a big spoon before you feed him for a month. Next comes the cap pistol( in the other room at first) Then the starter gun. Loud noise means something good is going to happen. Find a retriever club and go to the training, EVERY WEEK. Most members love to pass on the knowledge they have gained and help you with your dog. If they don't, find another club. Carry a metal comb with you when you hunt to get out the cockleburrs

Ol Abe has just five basic field commands (NO! is for other reasons), Commands are ABE!! which means go get it, BACK which means go get a blind, SIT which means, duh, sit and stay there forever, HERE which means come to me, and HEEL which means sit at my heal and take a cast or walk along side of me.After 11 years of just me and him living here, he recognizes lots of other words but they are not revelent to hunting----just us!

Oh sheit, left out one----KENNEL which means get in dog blind, blind, pit, truck, house, Vet's scale or exam table or anydamelse place I want him to be.
