"Please note: the law allowing use of crossbows will expire on December 31, 2012, after which crossbows may not be used for hunting big game in New York."

I hope that doesn't catch on. They just made it legal here for the first year at least for under 16 and over 55 and under a 2 yr. trial bases in a couple of units for everybody else.

Why?? Why wasn't it made permanent in the first place? The foolishness and great example political incompetence.
"The BIG Lie" The phrase was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile:[5][6] His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.[7]

That sucks! Too many regulations. No explanations or reasoning. Like bpearce stated: I hope it doesn't give our Game Management people any stupid ideas. We can use them throughout the bowhunting season.

The foibles of tactical archery equipment, and most of you thought it was only our guns the antis are after! Guess what, your K-bar, Gerber, Buck, Case, and other knives are also on the cutting block if the antis succeed with an AR ban!

The New York Bowhunters Association lobbied against the renewal of the crossbow legislation. Of course this is the same group that lobbied against the use of compound bows many years ago. One of the biggest problems with this legislation was it took away the use of crossbows from handicapped hunters during the bowhunting season. Before this anyone who was certified as incapable of drawing a bow could get a permit to use a modified crossbow during the bowseason. The crossbow needed to be modified so that the trigger mech would be operated by a tube the hunter would blow into. The bill also had no public support and was opposed by most of the states county Sportsmans federations.

For years here in Ga it was only those who were deemed 100% disabled by SS or the VA that were allowed to use crossbows. I had a pemit for a few years and then they changed the law and now everybody can use them when hunting whether it is archery season or not. Here we can use archery equiptment during any hunting season once the season starts. Our season always starts with archery, then muzzleloader, and then gun season. Makes no sense to me that they would take it away once it had been allowed.

Most Bow Hunting Associations call themselves Sportsmen... yea right... only if you chose to be one of their elite, I use to belong to one! Many states have archery seasons 2 to 3 months long... some more, and they feel that a week of so, where crossbows are permitted, is beyond reproach... I wonder if they realize hunting is not a sport, but a management tool to control animal populations, were the state benefits by charging a fee in an attempt to support their Fish and Game Departments.

Many states have areas where they allow multiple deer to be taken, usually because of being urban areas where firearms are a safety issues, increased tags are offered for additional revenue, and the dire need to harvest more animals. Something that most often doesn't get accomplished by standard hand held equipment.

This is just another example of giving hunters enough rope to hang themselves... and they're getting pretty good at it.

Dawg, that's how it should be. f someone wants to think they're better than everyone else because they use a compound bow and wouldn't be caught dead shooting a crossbow, goodie for them but don't tell me what I can and can't use. Within reason of course. Now if they REALLY want to think they're better, they should go out into the woods, cut a sapling and make their own bows, strings, shafts, fletchings, broadheads, etc like the Native Americans did! Now THEN I'd say, ok you have the right to hold yourself a bit higher.

But come on people, get your heads out of your a**holes and live and let live.

(Can ya tell that idiots like that just REALLY p*ss me off? ;-) )

"You gotta love New York"
Dawg: we are doing the same here. I had a "disable permit with doctor's form" to use a crossbow for 2 years; now the state made it for anyone throughout the state and seasons.

You have to love NY.... why?? Now.... if you took a huge chainsaw and cut NYS of from the beginning of Westchester County down off, and just let it float out to sea... yeah, it'd probably be a pretty decent place.

Down here in my game zone, hunting season means just what it says. Hunting, regardless of weapon used runs the exact same calendar days, period. Crossbow, Compound bow, recurve, muzzleloader, rifle, shotgun, spear, or bowie knife; it makes no difference. The animosity between the different styles of hunting is what the antis use to garner more support, and when we disagree with each other, we are only hastening the end of our lifestyle. I have noticed that in the last couple of years, bow hunters have seemed to grow and outnumber all of the other methods. It's almost impossible to watch a hunting program where people are actually hunting with guns; unless it's black powder! On the Hunt Talk site, it's the archery hunters who don't have a problem with gun bans, and they are also the liberals who voted for Obama. It appears to this old country redneck, that a certain aspect of archery hunters have become "archery snobs", and if they continue on the path they have chosen, it won't be long before they will have the deer woods all to themselves......and apparently that's what they want! They are the same group of non-residents that are trying to outlaw hound hunting down here, and are paying the outrageous lease prices for land in an effort to squeeze out the hound and gun hunting residents.

Well I'm not too familiar with Calif. but in NY's case what I described would pretty much include all of NY Citys 5 boroughs and Westchester county slightly to the North.   The rest of the folks in the state are pretty much middle of the road and use some common sense.

Steve, I'm guessing you may already know that many early natives didn't hunt deer, or other game in the same manner as today's bow hunters. They used other tools to aid themselves such as leg, and neck snares. Much of the game killed by early natives was trapped before it was killed.

They may have used such things as stands, scents, and calls, but I'm sure that the methods were much different than those used today.

Today's bow hunters, though very skilled seem to forget about all of the technological advantages they too are taking advantage of.
