Oh My God this has got to be the stupidest thing any newspaper anywhere has ever done!
Literally tens of thousands of names and addresses are shown for all to see!

The map indicates the addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Each dot represents an individual permit holder licensed to own a handgun — a pistol or revolver. The data does not include owners of long guns — rifles or shotguns — which can be purchased without a permit. Being included in this map does not mean the individual at a specific location owns a weapon, just that they are licensed to do so.

Data for all permit categories, unrestricted carry, premises, business, employment, target and hunting, is included, but permit information is not available on an individual basis.

To create the map, The Journal News submitted Freedom of Information requests for the names and addresses of all pistol permit holders in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. By state law, the information is public record.

Putnam is still putting together its records and could not immediately provide any data. The map will be updated when that data is released.

And this is against the law.

If it is then this paper has no clue............. yet!

I'm not sure about the legality's, but am sensing a law suit.

This is acceptable under the freedom of information act?

so, I can request the address of every Mercedes and BMW owner and publish that info? I'll just call it the 'Who to Rob' map.

LD, this is correct... They not only listed those who have a gun, but those who are easy victims with no self defense except a bat and a 911 call.

This was tried before and the information was supposed to be not covered by the freedom of information act. It may have been by a state by state basis. I do not remember. I beleieve it happened again after a massive shooting spree.  I treid finding an old report... but I smell presents under the tree....

How many actually believe that the NICS doesn't keep permanent records, and that such information would never be released under the FOI laws?

I think it was tried in ILL. and it got shot down under privacy laws there .

This can apply to any law; be it Gun Control, Seatbelt or DUI. It is all a slippery slope, because the punhishment only gets worse as they find it does it does not stop everyone. A Witch hunt is a Witch hunt no matter the group that starts it. Ask not for whom the bell toles.

Maybe under the equal oppurtunity act you should make the paper print the other side. "who can't shoot you houses".

Sorry, but I don't buy it. Only 3 in the Poughkeepsie area?!? Hell, there's three on my block alone. What a bunch of crap.

It said it was giving addresses of those with license for handguns. Maybe they meant those withh a ccw license.

Trust me; I personally know 3 on my block with ccw. F'ing thing's ridiculous.

Those not on the list could be listed as rape and pillage zones. Those listed, as do it at your own peril zones. Which one do you think would be safer. This like every thing else intended to protect us from protental harm, it usually goes to far.

No Steve not directed at you. But think about, which zone would you rather live in? If it were listed Mine would the do it at your own peril zone, the thing of it is most around here already know that. Those who thought of that would make you wear a scarlet letter to I guess, what morons.

I'll make it easy... I have a concealed weapons permit.

Doesn't bother me one bit... I have guns and know exactly how to use them... I might ever have a loaded one under my coat.
