I got skunked on my elk hunt. My brother in law got a pretty nice 5x5, and my nephew got a real nice 5x6. What was kinda wierd was that our hunt was after the bow hunt. You would think the elk wouldn't be that spooky. They were pretty well ready. All I saw was either legs running thru trees. Or just fur flashing thru the trees. My brother in law got 476 lbs of meat from his. My nephew got 435 lbs from his. He lost the ribs and backstrap. Or, rather, left it on the hill side. He was on horse back, and couldn't get it on the horse with the rest of the quartered out meat. His spun and got his antlers hung up in a tree on the hill side. He was easy to clean because of it. Just opened him up. And, his innerds just fell out and rolled down the hill out of the way. Then, had to skin and quarter him to get him out of the tree. |

he left the backstrap?he must be outa his frackin mind?here in idaho that would be wanton waste of meat and he could be fined.but aside from that, the backstraps are about the best meat on an elk and they take very little room |

wasting meat is one of my pet pieves. if you don't have room for it you go back for a second load. If you're not MAN enough to do that you have no bussiness shooting that elk in the first place |

I agree with both of you guys. he used the not enough room excuse along with he hit the bull in the back on his last shot. there was meat fuined as a result. i told him that not that much shoud have been lost even with a back shot. He insisted thatthere wasn't anything to be saved. I had my reservations about it. there is a lot of meat on the back strap. There should have been a lot of good meat still there. the coyotes had some good eating. Some kid shot at a bull. He was asked if he was going after it. He said he missed it. One of my hunting party found a dead bull partly eaten a feew days later. What a shame. A nice 6x6. We think it was the kid who shot it. |

I've heard that unit is a hard unit to be succussful in. There was eight tags in the party. Two out of eight isn't bad I guess. My last hunt. In another unit. There was five tags. All of us got our elk on that hunt. I think part of the problem this time was there were rights activists out there too. Keeping the elk stirred up. I had two wallk up on a water hole I was sitting on. Just walked up and plopped down on the opposite side from me. I had a few words with them. They refused to leave. |

That's a shame. I would have wanted to find their vehicle and deflate a few of their tires. |

That would have been a pretty good idea. At the time. I thought about getting on my atv and doing donuts right in front of them. Then I figured they weren't worth tearing my tires up for. |

well that sux. I haven't run into that yet thank heaven. Not sure what I'd do.... really no good solution I suppose. If you're on public land not sure there's much you can do if they're not being obvious about it. Even then, not sure. |

If he could bring out the antlers, he could bring out the meat. If he was sharing a camp with me, it would be the last time he is invited. Leaving meat in the field is not only illegal but extremly unethical. |

I hear ya. I haven't gotten an elk in awhile myself. This makes three straight hunts that I've gotten skunked. If I'd been thinking. I should have asked him to show me where. And gone in and gotten it myself. That's the best part of the animal. |

Bigrig, I've always heard that Elk is THE best wild game meat ever. I'd love to have a piece of backstrap or tenderloin of one. I'm hoping to make some friends in the club that might could give me some info on getting some Elk meat. I'm sure I could buy some from somewhere. Of course my ULTIMATE goal is to get out there someday and kill one. I'd love that more than anything! But until then I'm gonna have to settle for trying to buy some meat. But as for getting skunked, don't let that get you down. I've read that Elk are VERY tough to hunt. You can't feel bad about getting skunked by Elk because they're the best in the business at surviving. So keep after 'em, never give up, and enjoy hunting them. They are definitely the finest animal we have and you are very blessed to be close to them. Happy hunting!!!! |

I'm with you lt. Would love to try it but probably won't have the chance. That'd be a major trip for me and the funds probably just aren't going to pop up. But I would like to taste it. There's a store around here that you can get game meat but it's not the same. Notice I didn't say *wild* game. Everything's farm raised. Just not the real deal. |

I've gotten 2. Missed out the first time by my friends idiotic brother running between me and a 7x7 my first time out. Haven't hunted with him since. The brother that is. The next time was my fault. I had a 300 yard shot, and was messing around trying to figure the range to him. I didn't have a range finder. I should have just held dead on him. Got one each of the next two times out. The last time out. I saw one at 200 yards that my friend wanted to get closer and the bull ran. This time. I didn't even see anything. Elk is one of the tastiest animals you'll ever eat. And, once you've hunted elk. It gets in your blood. Especially, once you've heard them bugle during the rut. You'd rather hunt them over deer. |

I've shot 25 elk in my life and have been in on the taking of about 100 more. It helps to be from Colorado since we have more elk than the rest the states combined. I don't know that elk is the best meat of all. Wild sheep,Bison, Eland and Kudu are better in my opinion. But, elk beats deer hands down on the table. It's nearly a sin where I come from to leave any edible elk meat in the field. Elk are hard to hunt and it is worth any amount of effort to salvage every scrap. |

You'll probably hear that moose is better than elk. I had the chance to eat some. To me. I thought they both tasted a lot alike. The only bison I've ever eaten was bison burger. It tasted like any other burger. I've thought that about any other burger. Including elk aand deer. |
