Just about forgot this forum was down here! Looking at picking up a Smith & Wesson SD40VE and was wondering if anyone has some hands-on knowledge or thoughts on this one. Not REAL concerned about concealed carry, just looking at it for a decent inexpensive handgun for the house and maybe travel. Posted this question up in the firearms forum without thinking about this one here!

Thanks.

A few weeks ago myself and my youngest son went to a gun show here and I handled about all the major makers new models to include the one yu are asking about. I bought a Springfield Armory model XDs which is a sub compact .45acp which is made in Croatia. This handgun is not just a smaller version fot their successful XD line but a totally redisgned model that was doen for Springfield. The XD line is the standard issue handgun for the Croatian military so they are well designed, durable, and dependable. It has replaced my Para Wart Hog .45aqp as my daily CCW sidearm. I would suggest you give them a look at http://www.springfieldarmory.com as they are the samllest .45acp made today. I was both shocked and surprised as I expected a handfull when it came to recoil but it is about the felt equal to a Walther .32 semi-auto. Again this is simply my opinion and nothing more nor less.

Thanks, BD. I really thought hard about the XD and would LIKE to have one but the money makes me think twice. The S&W is right in my price range as well as a price my wife may not disagree with. NOT real concerned about concealed carry so the size factor isn't that big a deal. I'll be making a decision pretty soon, just can't get out for the time being due to just having knee surgery. Hope nothing changes in the buying process before I can get out there. Things are making me a bit nervous...

I have both of these, the SD40VE and the XDS referenced above. Completely different intentions. The XDS is design for CCW, while I would not use the SD40VE for that since it is much larger. Oddly I find the SD40VE easier to grip than the smaller single-stack XDS, and that's even with the Pearce grip 5-round mag extensions and/or the XDS 7-round mags with OEM extensions. If reaching for one in a hurry I'd probably grab the SD40VE first.

Did you ever receive this and fire it?  Your thoughts?

It's here, just haven't got any rounds through it yet. WAY too windy outside here. Like the feel of it, easy to disassemble, and looks pretty sharp as well. I'll make some noise sooner or later.
