Saturday, December 2, 2012, I went for a morning hunt in southern Indiana with my husband, Tracy, and his cousin, Louie. We have been hunting for 10 years at Louie's. The last few years we have been putting food plots on his land, so the deer will come and stay instead of pass through. Well, on this Saturday, the deer stayed in the woods. Tracy was 120 yards above me on the plot field and Louie was 100 yards to my right in the woods. I was down in the ravine. Tracy was ready to call it quits at 9:30. Louie said he would walk my way at 10. But, at 9:55, Louie's dogs (who weren't supposed to be out) jumped up 5 doe to Louie. He shot one. Tracy told me to watch for a runner. Louie's shot scared up a buck that ran my way. With hands shaking, and heart pounding, I tried to scope him in but had a hard time because I forgot to set my scope for short range. Finally, he had come up the hill enough and I could get a good bead on him in my scope through some spindly limbs and I shot him. He was about 50 yards away. He jumped around and sped down the hill then up the other. I was so excited and nervous. I could barely breathe or talk. Tracy told me to listen for him to stop. I did. I heard him reach a point on the hill, stop, then it sounded as if he crashed back down the hill. I was too excited to wait for one of the men to come look for a trail. I got down and did not see a blood trail and thought I had missed. But, Louie came to the rescue by asking me where the buck ran. I pointed in the direction of the other hill and said "that way". We started our trek. All of a sudden, Louie said "there he is!" The buck had ran about 150 yards up and across the other hill. Wow!!!! I could not believe it when I saw it. A 8 point buck!!! My first deer ever and I got a good one. The men field dressed it and we got him out of the woods. He ended up being 130 pounds field dressed with 8 points with some a little broken and a small point for a brow tine. I double-lunged him with my new H&R 44 rifle with hand loaded 250 grain ammo that my husband and a friend load. I am still excited to tell my story and show my pictures. To my dying day, I will never forget this event and the way it feels. I am very proud of myself and to be a female hunter.
P.S.-My husband hasn't gotten a deer yet. His friends are doggin' him big time. |

Congratulations. Sound about like my first deer and I also killed it with an H&R (.270 WIN). Post some pics of him if you got them. |

Steve: don't be mean. She did shoot a BUCK, and she'll probably end up cooking 90% of it for the rest of the guys. |

not intended to be mean. Where I'm from, you shoot it, you gut it. All part of how it works. And don't be sexist. Men cook these days. I don't think my wife's cooked a meal in 20 years. |

I really wasn't trying to be mean or insulting. That's really just how it was/is where I was raised. I'm 58 and my sisters are older than I am. They've both field dressed a lot of game over the years. My neices still do. Honestly, we were taught that it was part of killing an animal. Just went with the territory. And you couldn't find more traditional folks. |

Maybe one one taught her how. My Granddaughter helped me Field Dress her first deer, and she was only 16 yrs. old. After we skinned him out she decided to cut the top of his skull off to see how big his brain was. I asked why she would want to do that, and she said she learned in Health Class how big her's was, and she wanted to know how big the deer's brain was. I want her to know how these things are, so when I can no longer hunt with her, she won't have to worry about doing it herself. |

Congrats sstoops!! Nice looking buck. I didn't take your comment as mean, Steve. At our club it's the same way although we will help out. And i was thinking when I saw the picture, when my son took his first one at 11 he wouldn't let us take the pictures until we bloodied his face.lol Guess everyone has their own ways. Thanks for sharing your story sstoops and I hope you continue to be excited and successful. |
