I've hunted there quite a bit. The areas I have been are around Lynx pass. and also south of 134 near Rock Creek. In the past I have hunted mostly by Blacktail Road. The one issue you may run into is that they have been doing a fair amount of logging in that area so be sure to scout it out next summer.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info! I will be sure to ask and look into where the logging is. Are elk similar to whitetail in regards to being drawn towards clearcuts for feeding?

I used to hunt 15 a lot. My favorite place in that unit was just north of Gore Pass. I used Rock Creek Road to access the site. I mostly hunted it with blackpowder and if my memory serves me right I took 6 or 7 elk from my camp. But I haven't hunted it in quite some time.

A huge party from Virginia began to come into the area and they maintained a really big, messy and loud camp right next to where I used to set up camp. They kept their camp in place from the early archery season until the end of the late rifle season. I think they rotated something like 25 or 30 hunters through the camp each fall. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and since I'm a Colorado resident it was easier to just hunt a different area that put up with that type of competition. Funny thing is, I don't think the Virginians took very many elk out of there despite the fact that the camp was in the middle of great elk country. But like I said, they were messy and loud and elk ain't dumb.

I think rather than looking for clear cuts due to the logging, the question becomes access. They have been closing a lot of roads due to the logging. Most of what is taking place is the clearing of dead timber within 50 ft. of the road. Some are closed all through the season while some are open parts of the day. Best to contact the forest service to see what there plan is in that area.
It is a great area and worth the extra effort.
Hunt hard, hunt lucky and live life Huge!

Myself, a good friend of mine and his grandson plan to be there for the first 10 days of archery season. We have hunted there with rifles a few times, but the last time was about 12 years ago. The last time there we saw very few elk, but that was the 2nd rifle season and there were several other camps up there chasing around the mountains. I'm thinking about camping up there for a few days about the first week of Aug when we go to Colo for our family reunion and check things out a bit. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions and maybe we can get together on the mountain. dsrcowboy@yahoo.com
