Went hunting this morning, after hunting every morning and evening this week of my Thanksgiving break and seeing nothing, and finally had 5 come out on me at about 6:15 this morning. Pretty hard to see, but I could tell they were all slickheads, so I picked the biggest on out of the crowd, put the crosshairs on her, and had to hold off cause I was shaking so bad. Waited about 2 min to get my heart rate back down, and had to settle for the one that gave me the best shot, which was the yearling doe on the right. Squeezed off the Winchester model 70 30-06, and sent the Ballistic silver tip right through her. Waited about 20 min before climbing down, and found she ran about 30 ft before she hung it up. Dragged her out to the field and went to get the truck. Loaded her up and made my circle in the field and saw a big brown lump in the field. It turned out to be the old doe on the right. Killed 2 deer with 1 bullet. Surprise, surprise! Ammo ain't that expesive if you can get 2 for 1 every time! Lol! |

Congratulations. Your two for one is a nice surprise. Almost like pulling a Ronin Hood for bow hunters. It would be nice to see if you could do it again! |

I've had that happen before, but in reverse. I've shot the old doe, and then found the yearling where the bullet had passed through. BTW, I see that you live in Sylvania, do you realize that we live less than an hour away from each other. As a matter of fact, have you ever fished at Blue Springs, and noticed the Hampton County SC sign across the run from the boat ramp? Charlie Boswell who I'm sure you know owns Kicks Chokes, is from Estill, which is where I went to high School at Patrick Henry Academy, and then I also graduated from GSU, and have known quite a few folks from your neck of the woods. Prior to my strokes and being unable to work any longer, I spent some time working and attending meetings at the Advance Auto Parts store in Sylvania, also. We should get together sometime for a face to face!!!!!! |

I'll probably get torched for this, but oh well. This doesn't really strike me as necessarily a good thing. My point being is that it kinda throws the whole "know your target, and what's beyond it" theory out the window. Just sayin... Maybe I don't have enough info, but that's the thought that comes to my mind. |

Lumkerdog, you are absolutely right about that. It was dark, and I didn't know big mama was lined up beside the little one, but I DID know that beyond the area where they were standing was in no way shape or form anyone, anyone's property,or anything that could be harmed or destroyed. I knew all that for a fact, only because my stand is on my 5 acres, I know the area well, and the stand is about 25ft high, and the deer were about 100 yds from me, so the bullet hit the ground just after passing through the second one. Your point is good, and as a matter of fact I have an aunt who was visiting for Thanksgiving and she don't know much about hunting. She was absolutely shocked that this happened. And I told her that's why we all preach exactly what you said about knowing what's beyond your target. Because that bullet would have passed through a 3rd deer or a person, or someone's bedroom wall for that matter if it had been there. I felt comfortable taking the shot and would do it again given the same circumstances in the same place. But you will not get any torching from me, as I HIGHLY respect your thoughts. Thanks for being a safe hunter! |

Lunker it was VERY well worth pointing out and I appreciate you doing that. I probably should have touched on that in my original post to make sure everyone who reads it understands that what I did is not recommended and shouldn't be done haphazardly. Thank you for bringing that up as we all need to keep that in mind. RT4- From reading some of your posts, I figured you might be close but I didn't realize you were THAT close. I actually live in Poor Robin. I'm sure you know where that is. The landing there is where I used to fish a lot. Haven't been fishing in years though. Never fished at blue springs, but I grew up swimming in that hole. I think about it every summer and good Lord I miss that swimming hole! I also know Charlie Boswell, although I haven't seen him in years. In fact, I think I was in high school (about 18 yrs ago) since I talked to him. Haven't seen him since he hit the big time except for seeing him on TV sometimes. If you spent anytime in the Advance over here, good chance we've run into each other cause I go in there a good bit. That's where I get most parts from. Good store. And sometimes on a cold, clear night, when the atmosphere is just right, I can see the Estill prison lights from my house. The face to face sounds really great. Maybe we can team up and take down a pair of monster bucks someday. Happy hunting and keep slayin em! |

Yep, Lunker, first off you need to understand the type of terrain and the lands that most of us are hunting down here. It's mostly private property and like in my case, there isn't supposed to be anyone on the place other than my brother, nephew, Travis and myself......and then it's very rare that anyone but me is hunting. What happens a lot of times is we only see one deer, due to the plants and vegetation on the food plots, so it's not all that rare to actually drop an old doe and a fawn since the little one can't be seen. Both my brother and I have done it on more than one occasion. |
