I am wondering if my dog has it to be a hunting dog? He is a half pit bull, half bull mastiff mix. He is 4 months old, and we are still working on housebreaking him.

I know i couldnt use him for waterfowl, since his coat is way too short. but what about upland fowl? pheasant? grouse? perhaps geese in an open field?

Id love to know what my options are.

thanks in advance

Dewnmoutain,

I would suggest that you look at the breed history of the pit bull and bull mastiff to learn what these breeds were originally bred for. I would guess that they both were bred for a protection/guarding purposes. This is not to say that you couldn't use your dog for some types of hunting but other than the fetch aspect of bird hunting I would guess that your dog wouldn't be interested in birds at all. A lot of the hunting aspects of dogs are actually in the genes but you have to help the dog understand what you want them to do with those instincts. I am not saying that it would impossible for you to train your dog to be a hunter but it will take a lot of work if it isn’t in the genes.

Again, this is JMO

With the breeding of this dog it would probably make a dog for  hog hunting. I would  not waste my time trying to train it for upland hunting. If you want a dog for upland and waterfowl, try a lab. No harm in owning two dogs

A pooch of this breeding is in the catagory of protection as far as I'm concerned.  So Waterfowl and even upland will probably land you with many torn up or eaten birds.  Now if you train it properly you could defy the odds if you go for big game say mountain lion Hogs and or wild boar!  A dog of this breeding needs a much bigger challange then birds to not be considered aggressive or distructive!  JMO!

Well, i have just discovered that i do not own a pitbull mastiff mix. He is a Lab/pitbull mix. Found this out by accident. I received an email from the humane society that i got this dog from, and i was shocked to see the dogs twin looking back at me. Same bone structure, same ears, same small white patch on his nose, and the exact same patch on his chest. I seriously think that this dog was from the same litter.

well, you might have yourself a hunting dog than. Not sure what the pitbull cross will do for bird hunting though. After you shoot something he may want to tear it apart

well, right now im working on having him drop, but everytime he drops, he gnaws on the thing for a good minute before he drops it. Having a hard time figuring out how to change that behavior.
