Here is what I can say since I have never hunted bear. There are lots of bear in the Jemez area, I have personally seen some very large ones there. The Gila is always a good bet no matter what species you hunt, I don't know how the wolf program has affected the other predators there, but I am sure you can find what you are looking for there if you look hard enough. Good luck on your hunt!!

I was camped at a place called Ben Lilly and there were signs up warning about the wolf population in the area. I am sure you can do an internet search to find where other wolf reintroduction are going on. Jemez is another great place. The last bear I saw there was at Fenton Lake. It came into the campgrounds two nights in a row and did not survive the second. Jemez is in the northern part of the state and is known for its hot springs and several natural wonders like Soda Dam, and BattleShip rock.

if you want to use game calls wen hunting black bear a weounded rabbit call works well. id also recomend you find out if its legal to bait . if you cam hard candy , molasis , chocolate surap , cooking fat , bacon greese , and anamal carcuses are all good bait.....................................as for dogs ive never used them for bear hunting and ive taken 3 thus farr so i have no opinion on weather the dogs are good or not. good luck and good hunting!

another thing you shold know is black bears depend on their sence of smell do to poor eye sight , so id also use cover sents or through your hunting clothes in a bag with vegitation that is native to the area your hunting...........again good luck!
