I am finding lead conicals and lead balls harder and harder to find with each passing year. The in-lines using sabots and "black-belt" style bullets are just wiping the older guns and traditional projectiles out. I see a not-too-distant future when you will have to order these items from just a few specialty stores. Dixie Gun Works also has them I think. As to lube, I always have used the pre-lubed but that is just because that's the way I happen to buy them. Never stumbled into un-lubed ones. You need to lube them if not already and can use the heavy wax they use if you want, but Crisco or Bore Butter will work just fine. All lube does is soften fouling and ease loading. It does not help it come out any faster because soft lead ain't gonna slow down 25k psi gas anyway. |

I have been "molding" my own 50cal maxi-balls since 1973. I have about 4 or 5 friends that have tried them on their new inlines, and all of them seem to agree that their guns shoot more consistent with my poured bullets. Yes, you have to lube them but so what.... |

If you like the Thompson Maxi-Balls and you don't mind sniffling a little lead fumes, you might try casting some Lee R.E.A.L. bullets. I find they perform similar to the Thompson Maxi-Balls in my rifles. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/15...grain-real(By the way, what's going on with the MidwayUSA website? It's acting strange tonight.) |

R.E.A.L. bullets are indeed great. Have to make them yourself though. I have occasionally found some pre-made, probably by some basement caster like myself. |

I found some 50 cal. Lee R.E.A.L. bullets on E-bay several years ago. The bozo shipped 50 of them to me in a plain white envelope. Needless to say, all I received was a torn up envelope with my name and address on it. After I informed the seller what I received, he was kind enough to send another 50 to me, this time in a padded mailing envelope. They made it the second time. |

dwisler1, I have been casting my own full bore conicals for .45, .50 & .54 for years. I do have a Lyman .45 caliber maxi-ball mould that is a replica of the TC .45 maxi-ball mould. I would be happy to cast a dozen for you the next time I am casting if you would like to try them. Contact me through my club inbox with your mailing info and I'll send them your way when I get them cast. I have ordered some lead off EBAY and will fire up the old Lee pot when it gets here. |

I use a guy out of Clear Lake Iowa. His advertised price includes shipping. If you look on Gun Broker you will find him under "blkpwdrsls" a great guy to deal with. He makes most any caliber too. I buy his Maxi in .32 and .36 and have good luck with them (example: his .32 or .36 Maxi is available, unlubed, for $25.00 for 250 count shipped) It is hard to beat his prices. He also makes some great blackpowder lube in blocks. |
