I thought I would post this.
Started reloading two years ago with these bullets. Yes I am shooting a .300 win mag.
I have shot two deer so far. One at 102 yards and one at 35.
The damage from these bullets can not be described.
The five pointer last year at 102 yards was shot in the heart and the heart was completly destroyed. Deer traveled maybe 35 yards.
Just last week in South Carolina I shot a doe. I did a shoulder to shoulder broadside shot and completly destroyed both shoulders and the heart. The deer was dead before she hit the ground. This shot was squarley in the shoulder. Small hole in and a little larger out. Will not do that again. Here in N.J. I use 3" Lightfield slugs and the damage was nothing compared to the Nosler Ballistic tip.
Thought I would pass this on

You shot a doe at 35 yards with a .300 WinMag. A slight bit of overkill here.... |

Ballistic Tips get pretty explosive if you drive them over 3000 fps. In fact, I think even Nosler suggests you keep them under that level. I'd not use one in a magnum. Accubond, Partition, Barnes TSX, or a Hornady of some sort would be my first grab. I've heard some pretty good things about the Speer Deep Curls but haven't used one. FWIW, Dale |

Now Jim, are ya gonna tell me, if'n ya was out beatin' the bush, and ya had a doe tag--which we don't need, and ya need that critter to help fill the freezer for the winter, and ya happened upon a big ol' baren doe, at 35 yards, and all ya had with ya was your .300 win. mag., YA WOULDN'T SHOOT'ER??? Yaaa, ya sure would, however, if she was standing, or just walkin', I'm sure, like me, ya woulda eather blown her head off, or seperated her head from her neck---HUH? However, if she is on a dead run, all bets are off as to were that bullet may hit!

I know a 140 gr Nosler ballistic tip in .270 will make a deer shoulder explode at about 75 - 80 yards. I can imagine the damage a .300 WM would do with a similar bullet. |

Allen, I wouldn't shoot the deer, I'd shoot just over the deer and let the crack of that magnum smokepole kill the deer from the shockwave. Wastes less meat. Just drag her out at that point! |

I've been using the 150 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips in my 30.06 almost every since they first hit the market. They have always performed well for me. I have never experienced the explosive results as some folks claim. |

I used a 300 win mag with a 180 grain Partition. The amount of ruined meat was terrible. I believe I would shoot a partition with as slow of a speed as possible. My load sent the bullet along at 3100 ft/sec. I would try for a 180 grain partition travelling around 2800 to 2900 fps if possible.

I cronographed my loads at 2900fps. Ater rattling in four deer and seeing one, a spike that I passed on.
On the third evening of the hunt with a paid for doe tag in my pocket. that doe was toast. Would I do a shoulder shot again,I think not. A dead deer that was dead before she hit the ground will always be better than one I wounded and lost. For now on when ever possible I will shoot behint the shoulder.
Till next year.

I shoot 150 Accubonds out of my 30/06 after switching from BTs. The amount of bullet fragmentation and meat distruction on deer has went down considerable. |

I would not take a shoulder shot with a 300 win mag. I don't believe that I would choose a ballistic tip bullet with a 300 win mag for anything that I wanted to eat. Actually, since I ruined all of that meat, I purchased a .243 and use that with 100 grain Nosler Partitions for deer. |

The deer I dropped was not an intentional shoulder shot. Quartering away from me and the shot went through the ribs on the left and straight through the left lung heart and just hitting the front of the right lung on top before slamming in to the right shoulder. It might not have been a literal explosion but it sure as hell looked like it since the entire top part of the bone was gone, just shards all through the meat. Now I aim an inch or two forward or behind of my original aim point depending on angle.

The truth be known Steel Candy, I think that we all have probably had that happen. I did! 2 years ago, I had a nice 2 x 3 jump up and take off runnin', up on the ridge above me. Probably 75-80 yd. shot, he was quartering away from me. I did put the shot into the lung/heart area, but the bullet exited the left shoulder. However, I was useing my .45-70, and as ya know, with the low velocity, not to much blood shoot meat. More then a few bone frags tho! |

Ballistic Tips are at their best in the 30-30 to 308 range, at a 2900 fps impact velocity, they get a bit, er..disruptive. They perform beautifully at impact velocities of 1800-2700 FPS. When I am confronted with a very short range shot while carrying a high velocity rifle, I usually opt for a head, or high neck shot if there is time, or a low heart (through the elbow) or high mid-lung shot. The former will wreck the brisket, but generally spare the shoulder, the latter will often drop the deer on the spot, but if it runs, may leave a poor blood trail. The trick is to not rupture the diaphragm. There is no escaping the cavitation effect of a Mach-three bullet hitting muscle. |
