Ive been reloading for 20+ years, I have a 9mm pistol, and wasnt happy with the knock down power fron the 147gr loads on the market, so after many hours of research, i discovered that a 38/357 slug will fit in the case, now i am loading 180gr hornady xtp hollow points, and getting colse to 40cal ballistics fron a 9mm

Welcome to the boards Chris1023. Is there someone you'd like to list as an emergency contact, as you pursue a Darwin award?
With the difference in bullet diameters (0.355 vs. 0.357) and the additional bullet weight, I'd be concerned about exceeding chamber pressure limits. There's a reason why there's not a heaver bullet for the 9mm on the market.

If you have the rite equasions, books, tools, and know how, its not dangerous at all

I think it depends on the firearm. I have a Ruger Blackhawk with the 9mm & 38/357Magnum cylinders and it will shoot all of those despite them being different diameters. BUT....I'm also sure the barrel takes that into account. 9mm auto pistols set up for only 9mm might have extremely higher chamber pressures pushing the larger diameter .357 bullet down the bore. Unless my gun was designed for it, I'd avoid it. It may shoot fine for awhile but you may be shortening the life of the pistol rapidly. Until it's Darwin Awards time....

jplosay, shooting a 9mm bullet through a 357 barrel is fine, the 9mm bullet is slightly smaller diameter than the 357. Going the other way around is not safe unless your name is Chris and you have the "rite equasions" and you know what your doing.

Exactly, my whole point.  The Blackhawk barrel was designed to do this.  I don't know of any 9mm auto pistols that say you can use .38/.357 Magnum rounds in the barrel, except probably for a .38 Super.  So I wouldn't.  .38 Supers don't switch back and forth between 9mm ammo either.

Use what you gun was designed for, or get a new gun.  And don't invite me to range-day with those homefuggered loads.

Its nice you guys can just regirgitate numbers you find in a book, but untill you actually do the work, keep your openions private, ive measured the actual bullet diameter, the 9mm is on average .353, the 38 rounds i loaded were on average .353-.354

I personally have 4 differant 9mm that I reload for, a Beretta 92, Browning Hi-Power, CZ75, and a Taurus pt92.  I also have 3,
.357 revolvers that I reload for. All 3 Rugers, a pair of Security sixes' and a old Blackhawk.   I have swaged the barrels on all my guns, and the 9s' run fairly consistantly, .355--.3554.
Upon reading your last response Chris, I did go into my bullet  drawer, take out a box of Hornaday, 180 gr XTPs, .357 dia., as you had stated that you used. I did mic 10 of these bullets. Hornadays QC obviously isn't to good. I found that these bullets ran from a small of .3568 to a large of .3574.
As is my opinion, and if you didn't want others opinions, ya wouldn't have made your post, Any body, that would fire a heavy for calibre, oversized projectile, at velocitys that said weapon was not made to withstand, is makeing a mistake!!
Normally, I do not cast or buy bullets for my 9s'. Only for the .357s'. However, I did have the folks at CH make a .356 resizeing  die
so that I can resize .357 to .356.
Don't be so thinned skin Chris! If you don't want others opinions, then don't ask for'um. Many of the folks on this forum have been reloading longer then you have been alive, and do know of what they speak!

Only reloading for 60+ years?  Darn rookies voicing an opinion I tell ya!   lol JK.

I bet you forgot more about reloading than I'll ever know about it.

I thought a harder-hitting 9mm was called a 9x23 Winchester?

Mr Hoffman its not that i was thin skined, but i was verry through on my measurments, I am not trying to stuff a drastickley over sized bullet into the case, i measured almost all the bullets i loaded, and their was a thousanth of a in difference +/- on all, i am verry shure of my loads, and my experience i appericate your input greatley, sofar i have put about 2000 rounds down range and have had no issues, i am interested in the sizing die you talked about, im going to talk to my gunsmith and see what i can find

The one thing I haven't seen mentioned is future reloaders who may read the original post. Doing what you are doing may be working fine in YOUR gun but someone else comes along, sees the post and says "Cool, here's how I can 'magnumize' my gun". His gun ain't the same as yours, neither is his brass or bullets and HIS goes KA BOOM.

Generally, there is room to push the envelope a bit with loads but...

you are verry true, but i also never gave any powder types, or measurements, im not saying it will work for every gun and every person, if thus person wants to push the envelope, they need to do the same foot work i did to make shure it is safe for their perticular firearm.   Great comment and concern thank you for your input
