the latest Buckmasters mag? (No clue why I still get it but that's another question)

Anyhow, this story is one of a 12 or 13 year old girl hunting whitetail with her father. Ok, I'm
impressed... until the end when the  young lady shot a buck up the a&&.  It did it in of course
but most likely blew up most of the meat by the time the shotgun slug got done doing it's business
at 50 yards.   If I would have EVER shot a deer in the a&&, I would of been in the emergency room
having my Fathers foot removed from MY a&&.

And the kicker?  Quote from the father "Her buck scored 155 3/8 inches, and I couldn't be happier if I'd shot it myself"

Teaching a child that horns are the prize is just totally irresponsible in my book. Whether it's a 12
point record breaker or a baldy, the ANIMAL is the trophy and should be treated as such and with respect from the decision to pull the trigger.  Shooting ANYTHING in the a&&, excepting maybe a
burglar or drug dealer should not be praised.

OH, and I am NOT trying to chastise the young Lady! She'd obviously not been taught hunting ethics.

Steve, I agree with you completely with one possible exception. ABSOLUTELY you should not teach your child, or anyone else, that the antler score is the prize. However, if you are in an area that allows rifle hunting (like mine) you do have a choice that will not destroy the meat. If you load your own or can find it in the stores, Barnes X-bullets or other brands that are built on the same basic design do not destroy the meat. I have been processing a deer myself, thinking how this piece could go into the freezer, when my knife found the actual bullet that killed the deer. In my youth this would have happened only inside a pool of blood jelly. However, using X-bullets you really can "eat up to the bullet." This is because if you look at an expanded X-bullet there are four petals, each with a clear ridge in the center. Because of this they slicde through the meat instead of mashing their way through like a mushroom or a hammer.

My eldest daughter will be 14 in November. She is very interested in archery so her birthday present will be a youth compound bow(don't tell her). She is not sure that she could kill an animal, and that is fine. She is also sure that she prefers wild meat to domestic, and that's fine as well. But be sure of this - she will respect the animal whether she kills it or not.

A lot of people are anti-hunting, mostly because they don't understand it. Let's be as ethical as we can. It gives the anti's less ammunition.

Just plain stupid to shoot at the south end of a northbound deer. Most likely outcome a wounded animal. Anyone that would teach a kid to do such a thing should get the boot.

Steve, when I read the story, my reaction was exactly the same as yours. The guy did note, that his daughter surprised him, when she pulled the trigger, so maybe she just fugged up! I remember as a kid, I killed several deer while dog hunting that I put a load of buckshot into some of the wrong places. I actually shot low and often shot the legs out from under 'em before hitting them with a good shot.....of course those deer were running and I wasn't anything but a kid. These days, most of the deer I kill with a rifle are shot in the neck or shoulder, and drop dead in their tracks; but when using a shotgun while dog hunting, I still don't always make the best shot.

In the case of the girl in the story, perhaps her dad was overwhelmed by the bone and let it get the better of him. Besides, most of us are extremely proud of our kids when they kill that first deer, whether it's a nice one or a dink. Hell, all I've killed so far this season, myself, is a doe and two dinks, so who am I to judge????????

Despite my best efforts at teaching her better, my wife has shot several deer in the hind end. A habit she learned hunting at her daddy's camp that is not OK with me. I will say, though, she dropped every single one of 'em in their tracks.

As for the little girl in the original story, CONGRATS to her on her first kill! Now, hopefully her daddy will take it from here and teach her better for next time.
