I have a Thompson Pro Hunter with the easy out breech plug and was wondering what people use to clean the 209 primer pocket. I have tried a patch on the end of a brush, a flatend screwdriver with a patch and still have fouling left on the bottom. My next step is to try a reloaders primer pocket cleaning tool. Does anyone know if they make a tool for this and if not what do you use to clean the primer pocket. THANKS; OAKTREE

A good solvent will break it up and you can scrape it lightly away with a tiny screwdriver blade, or swab it away if dissolved enough with a Q-tip. I find that for really stubborn black powder fouling straight Hrdrogen Peroxide works great to dissolve the cake. I don't know if it works as well on black-powder substitutes but assume it would. If it is just a scorch-stain in there you won't likely remove it so as long as primers seat and extract properly I would not fret over it

I use a Q-tip dipped in Beakfree CLP or one of the other cleaners. You can even take some old T shirt (all thread bare cotton type.) and tear off a chunk. Apply the solvent on that and then push that in with a Q-tip for a more snug fit. Then just start twisting. If it is fouling, that will normally take it out.

I used to use a small precision type screw driver and solvent to get pretty good results , but a couple weeks ago I used a brass brush (the size of a big tooth brush) and solvent to get down in there and it came out crystal clean .

I drop mine in a CVA Parts Soaker can and let it sit for a good while then it just wipes off with a pipe cleaner and some air pressure.

I usually drop mine in the pot of boiling water I'm heating up to clean the barrel with. It's always come out spotless.

I have used Butchs Bore Solvent amd Q tips They seem to work real well

Don't forget to clean the inside of your breechplug from time to time.

Funny, so many using a Q-Tip. I thought I had a new idea. I am using that and Hoppe's solvent.

Now if I can just get my boy to use one with Hoppes in his ears...

I've had my Encore since about 1998, and I just soak mine in warm soapy water in the tub, along with the barrel. To scrub I use an old toothbrush, and pat dry with a towel and use a flexible pipe cleaner. I even use a piece of guitar string to run through the flash hole. Seems to work pretty well!

I do not have a 209 breech plug but use modern solvents for cleaning the breech plug as nearly all the residue is not powder related but is primer/cap related I use a number of tools to clean the flash hole. I use a long hat pin, a pipe cleaner, and recently started using dentutek brushes. I get them from the cheap stores like Dollar General or Dollar tree. They are to be used for between the teeth but work very well as a flash hole brush.

I use hot water like grandpops and a pipe cleaner.
