My recommendation is the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Season opens in mid September and the weather is usually pretty nice, sometimes down right warm, and the bulls are bugling. Find an outfitter with a camp on the SF of the Flathead and there will be cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish to catch. Last time I went in I brought my old single shot 16 ga. and after filling my tags my guide and I bagged a few ruffed and blue (dusky) grouse for dinner. That was many years ago but I'm going back at least one more time.

The horseback ride can be pretty long but the sights are well worth it.
Any Place This Good Needs Weather This Bad For This Long To Keep The Riff-Raff Out.

If you want to DIY, probably need to look at Colorado.....
Yooper, you brung me back some memories....hunted the Bob and into Scapegoat once upon a time....beautiful tough country....killed a fools grouse for the pot with a rock! Hunted going out of Augusta....7 hunters was a little much ....me and bud with me both were only ones to get muley and elk....three others took elk and 2 struck out...it was an experience...lot younger, leaner, tuffer then! Bud and I doubled scored because we were not age we are now and several of the other dudes were!
