TGJ,

To Quote you from last year.

"ARE YOU READY???

It is time.  We are packing deer camp up, getting the food ready to go.  Looking forward to another great time at deer camp.
Tents are ready, stoves are good to go and the rifle are ready and the ammo is loaded.

I am getting fired up,  as if you could not tell......

Hope you are all going to have a great hunt.  "

I am a work in progress.  Since I walk out the back door to go deer hunting I have been scouting while grouse hunting.  I set one tree stand on Tuesday.  I have not decided where to move the 2 man ladder stand.  I'll have to get my boy to help me move that one.

The big time user in getting ready for deer season this year is my decision to use a hand gun.  I have not practiced this much for a deer season since I bow hunted as a boy.

I totally re-aimed the Winchester 94 /30-30.  You can find the details under firearms/25 yard shot.  I have my main gun ready and the backup.  Now if I can just get the deer to cooperate.

I checked the moon rise and set for Saturday.  Depending on the cloud cover it is going to be a bright predawn.

Snow is a possibility so that may get the deer moving before afternoon.

I made my last getting ready for season purchases.  Now it is time to get the clothes out and wash them in soda.

Now if I can only get the honey do list done.

We are heading for deer camp in the morning. The trucks are loaded we are getting excited for the new season.

I hope everyone has a great and safe season. I will try to post from camp but it is always a crap shoot if I will have enough reception with the hot spot.

I am writing this with a paper bag over my head.  "Why" you ask?  Well, because I am going to miss the opener on Saturday to help a friend from work with a side job.  I am kind of embarrased.  Haven't missed an opener in many years.  But I do plan on getting out on Sunday, and hopefully make a connection with either my bow or handgun.  Later next week I plan on heading up to Duluth and spending a few days hunting there.  At least that's the plan.

Good luck you all this weekend and week or weeks to come, depending on the zone you are hunting.

-CA,

We'll save one for you.

My bags are packed, clips loaded, gun ready, washed clothes in soda. I made some cedar/spruce tea for my boots, packs and gloves.

4:00 am is going to come early and bright.  Unless the cloud cover gets thick, I won't need a flashlight in the morning.

Safe hunting to all.

Left the house at 5:32.  Started down the power line SNORT!  The wind is in my face that deer must have seen me.  The deer and I both headed east.  After two more snorts we parted ways.  Other wise I got skunked.

-CA

I told ya we'll leave one for you.

Day 2,

Slept in and still got up early.  DST will do that to ya.  Decided to check the trail cam to see who was snorting at me yesterday.  No memory card in the cam.    Went and got the card from the computer and turned the cam back on.

Went out after church.  tried still hunting.  I bumped one.  It never snorted at me.  It must of saw me.  With the crazy wind conditions it is hard to tell.  I did come across a fresh rub in area I had walked by on Friday.

NOAA said east winds for the afternoon.   Not!! they were west south & east.  Near sundown the became steady out the east.

Went out for a couple of hours this morning, but no luck.  The only one I did see was a roadkill about 5 blocks from home, right on the edge of town.  Of all goes well at work, I will head north mid week.

I saw one on Saturday evening, it was about 200yds out in a two year old clear cut (Spruce Bog) I couldn't tell if it was a doe, or the spike I've been getting on my cams all Summer. I decided to let it walk, it was too soon to end my season

Day 3

I saw my first buck of the season, a four point, problem was it was in the village near the church.

Went out for couple of hours still hunting.  Climbed a ridge and heard a sound off to the right.  I stood still and looked eventually I saw some legs moving in thick growth.  Found a shooting lane and waited.  I saw a leg once more as it moved further to the left.  I never had a clear view of the head or body.  At least I actually saw a deer!!

Tripnchip,

Glad your opening day went as planned.

Trip, congrats

I'm not sure how it actually works for you. On the one hand the freezer is filling up On the other the hunt is over

On a side note, your sons old Blazer was still running for Gage as of last week, but is developing an engine tic as the weather is cooling Gage figures it to be a lifter tic, so if he stay's on top of it things may work out, and it will make the Winter.

Gage is a sharp, and hard working young man so I hope it works out for him.

Lunker, I hope the blazer holds up for him to. What you said of Gage was my impression of him when I met him. It didn't look like much but kept on ticken for the son.
After hunting hard all of the archery season without any shots I'm not realy to disapointed in being done. If I get the urge to hunt I can always go help my nephew and his crew.
I got my buck with a 260 rem. that I was realy considering sending down the road because the first two deer I took with it I never got complete penitration or a blood trail. Both of them deer were good behind the shoulder hits at close range, no reason to not have gotten complete pen. Granted they never made it over 50 yards but that might as well be 50 miles in some areas.  Well I loaded up some Barnes 120 gr. TSX's this year. Took this buck at about 70 yrds broad side so had another good behind the shoulder shot. At the shot he took about 3 fast stepts slowed for about five yards and then stood with his head hanging. I knew it was over but put one through his neck to anchor him. The exit hole was about one inch taking out two ribs. With this load I just might keep the 260.
May the lord bless you all with meat in the freezer.
