Got this alert from a local trainer today:

The “Virginia Non-Resident Permits” are not good in TN if you are a TN resident.  They are only good if you are not a resident of TN!

Some people are going to get arrested for carrying a weapon in TN without the TN permit.  This is a scam.  People seem to think if they send in for this they skip the training and only send them money and a background check.

Repeat – if you are a resident of TN or have moved here from another state you have to get the TN permit.  No other permit is recognized in TN if you are a resident.  If you live in another state and your permit is recognized here you are good.  And, if you have a TN permit and travel into another state that does recognize TN permits you are good as long as you go by the laws of the state you are visiting.

Please pass this around to all of your friends and if you do not believe me call the Dept. of Safety Handgun Division and speak to Ms. Knight or the Legal.

People taking short-cuts will get into trouble and make us all look bad!

Training is different State to State and each has its own laws. Makes sense to me that if you move to a State you ought to go through their own training and not just operate on your old State's permit. I have heard several vets proclaim they could carry a sidearm in Afganistan and should not have to go through training to carry here. Umm, wrong dude. Carrying in Afganistan is a LOT different than carrying into Wal-Mart in Tennessee. It's not just how to handle the pistol it's more about when and when NOT to draw the weapon and how to carry it.
