What do people think/believe about smokin in the stand or spitting chew on the ground? Do you think it will scare deer away?

I smoke in the stand but I put my butts in a film cannister so I'm not littering up around my stand. And I've had no issues with smoking in the stand. I've killed two bucks while I had one lit. I failed in my last attempt to quit smoking BUT I've set a new stop date Oct 1 which is also opening day of bowseason. I thought that that would be a good time. As being back in the woods calms me and urges usually only last a minute or less and I can spend that time watching chipmunks. I know you guys all know being out in the woods calms ones soul and renews the spirit. I could go on and on about that subject before but I won't say anymore on the subject TODAY anyways.

When I smoked I smoked on stand and like gut, brought the butts out with me. (carry in, carry out right? )

Never noticed any issue. Never tried chewing - sorry, but that's just nasty IMO.

Gut: good luck this time. It's tough that's for sure. The key is YOU have to be ready, and I mean really ready.
I'm goin' on 4 1/2 years so far and have never even thought about picking one up.

I used to smoke alot in my stand. I have killed deer while smoking. I have also scared a few away. I think if you are in a stand, and the wind is blowing the wrong direction, your busted anyway. That's why I will not even think about going to a stand if the wind is not right. If it's the only stand you have, then I suggest staying scent free as possible. I quit smoking after 15 yrs. and now chew alot. I spit in a bottle. I have no doubt in my mind a deer could smell my spit if I just spit on the ground. That's alot of spit over several hours. If your a meat hunter, you will probably have some succcess sooner or later. But if you are after a mature buck, you need to do everything possible to go undetected EVERYTIME you go to the woods.

Thanks guys, I've herd all kinds of myths about smokin in the stand. I've herd more the hand motion scares them more than the smell of the smoke. I've killed deer both smoking and chewin in the stand but I just wanted to get other opinion on it.

I don,t beleave you are worried about this when you are up in a tree stand The deer can,t smell things that are way up in the air unless you are hunting for deer who are comming down hill from your tree stand Me I always smoke when I,m in a tree stand Because I,m way up in the air above the Deer and Smoke rise,se but if I,m on the ground I,m alittle more cariful When and where I smoke But you know what I can,t Remember seeing a Deer when I din,t Smoke I mean I won,t Be a chimley if I see The deer comming but I do not beleave that it matters if you smoke or not You just got to cut down on how much you smoke and with me it calms my nerves and keeps me aware that I,m human Lol. PS it is true That We all need to not litter So if you are going to smoke Carry in carry out and always leurn from your misstakes so if smoking is not working then bring some hard Candys with you until you get out of the woods ,But Remember it always is diffrent for you Because What works for one Person don,t always work for some one else I put my butts in my pants Pocket When I Smoke but I have Leurned to cut down And I do so by Eating Rootbear  Berrles Lol or some other hard candy With the same Idea Carry in Carry out .

Good luck, gutpile! Hope you can kick the habit this time. Being in a relaxing setting like the deer woods should help.

I've never been a smoker (and never will) so I don't have the answers here. I do have friends that smoke, and like others here have said, I am sure it depends on the circumstances how it affects your hunting.

redhawk2, I sure hope those butts were completely extinguished before you put them in your pants pockets.

I stopped smoking years ago, but when I did, I always smoked while hunting, although when dog hunting, a lot of things are different from sitting in a tree. I also used to chew, but I always had a spit cup, or bottle. I stopped chewing when I went to using dip ( pouches), since I never spit with the dip, there's never been an issue. Even when I was still working, Advance Auto Parts had a no tobacco policy for all employees including those of us who were in management; since I never spit, and the pouch fit nicely down between the cheek and gum, I always kept my dip and no one was the wiser.
