Morning,

I am a, hopefully, a new hunter. I am hoping to register for a new hunters course this year and head off into the woods late Nov. I am in Leominster, MA and am looking forward to going out an experiencing this aspect of life. I am a Scout leader and know about leaving no trace, camping and hiking in the woods.

I was wondering if anyone else can help me with some tips and good places to hunt in the Commonwealth. I have plans on going in Leomisnster State Forest and maybe in Bolton.

Thanks!

What do you want to hunt?
What firearm will you be using?
How proficient are you with the firearm you will be using.?
With a 22, can you place 4 out of 5 shots within a 1 inch circle @ 50 yards?
Are you going to hunt deer sized animals,? If so will you be using a rifle or shotgun? What are the laws?
Be sure you are an ethical hunter and can place your shots precisely for clean kills, we as hunters owe that to the animals we hunt.
Check your Mass. game laws, natural resources dept for laws and places to hunt and regulations.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE PRACTICE.

The hunter safety class will answer many of your questions and some things you didn't know that you didn't know!

Best wishes,

montveil, I wish to hunt Whitetail and in the future move onto bigger game, maybe elk and the like. I own a Hawk 981 12 gauge shotgun, and I just need to purchase a longer barrel, the one I have now is a little too short for game hunting. I have used the gun before and I have a friend nearby and he knows a good place to practice. I have handled shotguns before and I think I am proficient enough to handle the weapon pretty well.

I will be checking the state laws about hunting and the like, and with the classes I hope that any unanswered questions that I have will be answered.

If and when I do get one I will be posting a picture on this site to share it with the hunting community.

I would suggest posting this in MA state forum. I bet you'd get more localized help that way. Good Luck and Welcome to da woods!
