Yesterday afternoon I decided to go fishing. About 5 mintues after arriving I heard a huge commotion across the river and looked up to see about 10 turkeys fly out of a tree with four of them flying directly across the river toward me. Well you can probably guess what happened next, two of the turkeys landed about 20 feet to my left , including a Jake, and two landed at the edge of the river, about 30 feet away. The two by the river stayed there for probably 5 or 10 minutes while I was getting my rod ready, while the Jake and the hen slowly walked off after about 2 or 3 minutes. I made no effort to hide or conceal my movements and it was like they didn't even care. Why doesn't this ever happened during the season?

OK I will bite. How long is "long enough"? Remember no camo, no call, no decoy, no concealment, plenty of movement and 3:30 in the afternoon. I would love to say it was my magnetic personnality but...LOL

Maybe it's because you weren't calling, pretending to be a lonely hen, that they didn't feel threatened. It's when they come in to find a hen, only to find you, that they are easily spooked.

I will always be convinced that animals have some sixth sense that tells them you are or are not hunting them.....deer walk in in turkey season, turkey walk in in deer season, muleys appear during elk season Impala are there by large numbers and disappear when you need fresh bait, Ele ignore you.....yep, they got a sixth sense!
I have killed Black Wildebeeste and Sprinbok who knew I was there by never looking at them and pretending not to notice until I was within 300 yds or so while they were in wide open Savannahs....go figure....

Tom.

There is much truth in what you say, I have experienced the same phenomenon with game animals, although I have not noticed it as much with birds. I would supposed there is a plausible explanation to why this happens. I just mentioned this event because when I comes to turkey hunting I am the original hard luck guy, I am begining to think that Murphy patterned me turkey hunting and then designed Murphy's Law...LOl

I know how you feel. I was muzzleloader hunting by a corn field this week and what wanders out about ten o'clock but a nice flock of turkey. I watched them for awhile before they decided to move into the woods. What odds do you think I'll have seeing them in two saturdays when the PA turkey season opens? I'll be checking out that field a few more times before the season opener. Good luck in turkey season.

Ok guys sorry to burst the good ideas on tactics and all the gear we spend money on, but the real answer is...........................................they have a calendar and know the dates and then just to prove it and laugh at us they parade around in front of you then go back to the "woodsy friends bar", tell the tale and laugh at us!! Its happened to often to be bad luck..deer in turkey season, turkey in deer, even a pheasant in the woods almost tripped over my boot while i sat waiting for the d@#$T deer!
I'm telling you they get the hunting season dates!

: )

I hear that, Tom.  Usually a combination of both!

More than once, I nearly stepped on a turkey during deer season... and nearly filled my pants when it flew up in my face.  I agree that they seem to have an internal calendar that lets them know when we hunters are a threat.
