Hey folks I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but here goes. I am going to pattern my shotgun and I was wondering if any of you had an opinion on whether it makes a difference or not what kind of backing I tape my targets to. What we have at our range is a metal plate that is approximately 40"x40" that is on a stand to it sits about 4' above the ground. We tape the paper to this and then do our patterning. I was wondering if the metal would be a problem. Do I need the pellets to pass through? Thanks.

You're going to shoot @ a metal plate with a shotgun? Is it flat or angled toward the ground? Shotgun pellets like to bounce around, projectile deflection. Shooting a plate will cause pellets to go everywhere. You need a pass thru. Truthfully, I don't even like shooting rifles on angled plates. You shoot a shotgun into a plate from 40yrds, you're most likely to end up with a face full of pellets.

Plain dumb!!!! You want a target for patterning? Go steal an Obama sign of some morons lawn and use that. I always grab up political signs with the wire after election day they make great target holders.

Cardboard works the best. Never pattern on a steel plate. As it was said before you will have a face full of pellets. Kind of puts a damper on the whole thing.

Yes I kinda of figured it was a bad idea. Not sure what they are using it for at the range. Maybe just small lead shot for trap and skeet shooting?

Can you put it (steel plate) on a 45 degree angle to deflect shot down and hang you target at vertical???
