I believe that if an individual actually began handgun shooting with a revolver, they tend to have a more "instinctive" aim ability. Plus, let's face it, Ruger is the closest thing to perfection that exists............at least that's the way most of us who own them feel, anyhow!!!!!!!!!! |

I know mine will get passed down to my youngest son when they throw dirt on me as it will not be sold. It was the first firearm I had built exactly the way I wanted. |

I think the same set-up but on the 7.5" barrel version is better. A buddy bought the shorter version and topped it with a 2x20mm Leupold at the same time I got mine. We developed loads together and shot each gun many times and I really felt the shorter version was handier. But, there is a smidgeon more velocity in the longer barrel and it does look cooler, plus it helps dampen recoil a bit more. |

Yeah, mine is the 7 1/2" barrel. I believe those grips are the concalvo grips. I have the after market pachmyers. The only thing I've ever found wrong with Ruger, is the factory grips tend to be too small for my hands. |

The Redhawk grips to me are too round, allowing my fingers to wrap over eachother and makes it hard for me to keep it under control for follow-up shots. The Super-Redhawk grips however are just right for me, essentially being like their great GP100 line. |

When I lived in Ohio years ago, handguns or shotguns were all that was allowed for deer hunting. In the seven years I lived there I shot a number of deer with a TC with a barrel chambered for 30-30 and a fixed 4X scope. Worked really well but you had to be pretty good as it is rare to get a second shot. |

Though as noted my personal preference is the .44 mag if I owned a .357 mag I would not hesitate to use it for hunting deer. If I were to use the .357 I would keep my shots to 50 yards and under and we all know that irregardless of what we choose it is bullet placement that really matters most. A .357 put through the vitals will kill just as dead as a .44 mag or whatever else is used. |

Every hunter should realize that it's the loss of blood that keeps game down for the count. That said the quicker the blood loss the quicker you start to field dressing you game. Therefore the bigger(diameter) of the bullet used the sooner your game expires. I'm not saying that the .357 maggie won't take deer cleanly, it will and has been proven to do this but, if you can handle more lost game or longer tracking times, go ahead and use smaller caliber handguns. I disagree with the previous poster thought the bullet construction is the key. I think it's where you hit them but, bullet construction may account for the amount of meat damaged? Steve |

I'm surprised nobody has split the difference and went with the .45 acp? Nothing like a 1911 for sure placement and quick follow up if need be. |

GLW, Here you go. I shot her at 20 paces from a tree stand using 45ACP LRN. It was a pass through shot entering at the neck and passing out the right shoulder. -MD |

Congrats! Great shooting. The 1911 is my all time favorite weapon. (Didn't hurt that I rebuilt them in the military!) |

Mine has the slightly rounded " cowboy grips " that are a Reeder specialty and when firing it if you let it roll back and up the felt recoil is close to nothing. Alot of fellers here have shot mine while at the range and one of their first comments is " That thing does not recoil like most others I have shot ! " and this is as I said is true. It's hard t believe that such a small thing as reshaping the grips can have such a profound effect on felt recoil. |

I now carry my SA XD .45 with a LaserLyte on it for my backup when deer hunting. I have finished off a deer or two with it, as well as killed a few moccasins. |

Ok; after reading this entire link and all the mention of the Ruger .44 mag and the 1911, you all have me intrigued. I just picked up a nice used Super Blackhawk (.44 mag) with a 5.5 in barrel and fixed/adjustable sights that I was planning to use for deer hunting. I also have a Colt .45 1911 Mark IV series gov't model. Being that they are both excellent pistols and have fixed/adjustable sights, my question is which one is better for the purpose? Granted that they both have fixed/adjustable sights and have shorter barrels, I can only expect shots in the 25-50 FEET range. Or am I wrong? We really havn't had much support in the past years in Wisconsin for handgun hunting until our recent passing of the concealed carry law. I love my M77 rifle, but when I feel confident enough, I would like to go out one season with only a pistol. But which one? And what parameters should I be paying more attention to? |

Shootin'J, You'll need to check the WI regulations. When I was searching for Ammo I e-mailed Superior Shooters supply and they indicated that the 45acp was not legal for deer in WI. In MN as long as it is center fire and larger than 25 cal. It is legal. -MD |

Personally, if the pistol is all I'd be carrying, I'd stick with the .44 mag.; but that's just my opinion. |

Thanks for the input MD and Rt. MD, I checked the regs before deer season and as I stated, WI changed that law/rule when we passed the CC law. The regs are pretty much the same as you stated in MN, but we can go as low as a .22 cal. We must have a CC license, and we must be over 18. Barrels have to be a Minimum of 5.5 inches too. |
