Hi, welcome and congrats. But I'm very curious... how does german soldier get stationed in the US, and what did you have to do to get hunting licenses? |

hey steve.... we (german air force) have our flying training center here on the holloman afb. i'm one of nearly 680 german soldiers here in alamogordo. our job is it to train the new pilots for their new job back in germany. they finish the training after 6 months. i do the adjustments for our engines in the jets (Weaponsystem TORNADO) my tour of duty started 2008 and i will stay until 2014. i have a NATO-VISA (also my family), my daughter is a REAL US-CITIZEN.... i love it to be outside... i did a lot of camping-trips over the past years but i was never hunting before. a friend ask me to join him on a short hunting-trip last march. he was looking for feral hogs. i said okay and was suprised about all the hunting. it was awesome !!! i decided to "be a hunter"... i bought the big game hunting license here in new mexico and started hunting. after two weeks my first success... a nice sau !!! my wife said i'm crazy... i spent nearly 2 days in the mountains (lincoln national forest) i looked for tracks, set up several cameras, checked many forums (takes 2 hours per day) for signs of predator activities, my best friend and helper is google earth for natural water-sources and trails.... the list goes on and on... BUT everything paid off... i know the area better than my "hunting-mentor" after three months and i know where to hunt :-) i got several tags after the new mexico game and fish lottery.... DEER, PRONGHORN ANTELOPE (see my other post) and ORYX... it was unbelievable... i bought a bear tag and cougar tag over the counter. so far... everything looks real good for my first hunting season :-) hope i can fill those tags.... :-)

cool. There's the something new I learned today! I didn't mean anything derogatory, I was just curious how that worked. Do you get some sort of military licenses or do you have to apply into the overall lottery pools, etc? Nothing crazy with enjoying the outdoors. Not sure how much you get to travel while here but there are vast differences in the landscape in various parts of the US Travel around if you're able. And if you can hit Alaska and the Grand Canyon, by all means do so. Not sure I'd recommend Alaska in the winter though. ;-) |

no i didn't get the military licenses... those are only for US-Military... i used the overall lottery pool like a us-citizen. about travel in the states: we visit a lot cities in the past 4 years.... (tucson, tombstone, phoenix, houston, dallas, san diego, las vegas, albuquerque, el paso, salt lake city, moab, denver, colorado springs, santa fe, san antonio and the list goes on !!!) the highlights are YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, GRAND CANYON (5 times so far) and the State UTAH with all the NATIONAL PARKS.... Pikes Peaks, Crazy Horse.... i can't find a end here :-) alaska is a dream but we don't have enough time for this trip... maybe in the future when we are back in germany... i mean the united states are allways a part of our life... 6 years are a long time and my daughter was born here... so i'm feeling like an "american hunter" instead a german one :-)

sounds like you're seeing quite a bit. You should get to the east if possible. Totally different, as is the north west. If you can get east next month when the leaves are in color, its pretty as well. Nowhere as spectacular as the Canyon but, still very pretty. My wife and I got married at the bottom of the Canyon on the bank of the Colorado. Not your traditional wedding, but one we'll never forget either. Keep it up and take in all of the sights that you can. And YES, if you can ever swing going to Alaska, by all means; Do IT! Absolutely spectacular. |

Patta, I am in Colorado and an American soldier. Both mine and my wife's families are German (Born and Schlicht). We were stationed in Italy for 5 years and spent quite a bit of time in Germany. We absolutely love the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area of Bavaria. I am glad you are getting to enjoy our country and opportunities for hunting. If you are ever near Fort Carson feel free to hit me up for a beer!! SFC B (Larry) |
