I don't use dogs or bait here in WV either. Not sure what their definition of bait is in VA, however we can use scents and calls. I have brought them in using an injured rabit call. It's a must to go on for a long time though. Calling is not like for deer. You call, they come, you stop, they stop.. So you will get tired and will wear yourself out watching around you. They come in so quiet ! I hunt from a blind and this method is exciting but doesn't mean the cat is in the bag. Have hunted quite a few years and this method only paid off once. Have brought some in however when they don't see anything they will evacuate quickly. Have actually had better luck with scent sticks, scent jells (none etable of course) and bear bombs. In WV we can use none etable enticements, so I put an old can or pack out in front of my blind to give them something to look at when they get close. If the bear doesn't see anything when they come in to the scent sticks or sprays they will retreat. It's a tough way to hunt but then again, that's the best part is the hunt. I have passed up many bear, due to size, and have had some monsters in pretty close but couldn't get a clear shot. It's still more exciting than any hunting I've ever done. Being on their level and often pretty close is amazing. Good luck. |
