I have never dyed a tanned deer skin to a different color. I have used hide and hair dye on mounts that I have done, to camouflage areas where hair was thin.
I know that they make an alcohol based dye that is used to dye leather. If I am spelling it correctly it is Fiebing’s Leather Dye.
Alcohol-based dyes work well on leather because alcohol is quickly absorbed into the leather taking the color pigment with it. I have never used this, so I don’t know how well this would work on Deer hides.
Water-based dyes are not as effective on some types of tanned leather. So I would think that it would depend on how the hides were tanned as to how well they would accept the dye.
Sorry I couldn’t be more help….. Just curious, what are you going to make with the deer hides? I would like to see pictures of your project when you finish it.

ksheffer,
Check with TANDY LEATHER CO. I have been using their products since 1965, and I'm sure you can find what you need from them. They're on the Internet, and would send you a catalog. Also VAN DYKE'S is another good source. Good LUCK.

Thanks for the info. I am making an indian dress, i have had the hides for a few years and had them done natural, but a white hide would look awesome. Actually I have a friend making them as i am not girly and can't sew
